Warning: The following contains major spoilers for the Nosferatu 2024 remake. Emma Corrin shares insights into her reaction upon discovering the fate of Anna in the latest adaptation of Nosferatu. Directed by Robert Eggers, this 2024 reinterpretation of the iconic 1922 film dives into a haunting love story entwined with horror, featuring Count Orlok (played by Bill Skarsgård) and Ellen (Lily-Rose Depp), who inadvertently awakens him from his slumber. As Ellen’s husband travels, she refrains from being alone by staying with Anna and Friedrich Harding (Aaron Taylor-Johnson). Count Orlok’s sinister tactics to win Ellen include threatening those she loves, culminating tragically in the horrifying fate of Anna, who sees her children victimized before her own demise.
In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Corrin opened up about her initial response to Anna’s tragic arc. After reading the script, she promptly inquired with Eggers regarding the rats involved in a critical scene, eagerly awaiting a reply that ultimately confirmed their real presence. Reflecting on the filming process, Corrin remarked that while the scene was “incredibly unpleasant”to execute, she felt a profound connection and empathy for Anna. Further elaborating on the character, Corrin praised the depth with which Eggers approaches his characters, highlighting Anna’s internal struggle between her faith and her unwavering friendship with Ellen, making her end even more poignant. Here’s what Corrin had to say:
Corrin: I remember, first of all, I texted Rob [Eggers] and asked if the rats were going to be real or CGI. And he sent a very short text back being like, well, obviously real. I’m like, I’m so sorry I asked.
I was, I mean, obviously massively felt for Anna, but also, I thought, wow, what a great arc. I love the way that Rob, even with the smaller characters, there is nothing that goes unthought about. He’s very considerate. He considers characters from all angles.
And yeah, I love playing her. I love the complexity of it, and her friendship with Ellen and how she’s torn between her religious belief and this unconditional friendship, and the other choice she’s faced with, and all the more tragic when she dies.
What was that experience like?
Corrin: It’s kind of what you think it would be like. Incredibly unpleasant, but also the things you do for Robert Eggers.
Implications for Nosferatu
The Reality of the Rats
Critics have hailed Eggers’ 2024 Nosferatu as a visually stunning entry into the genre of gothic horror, characterized by meticulous production design. Eggers has confirmed that an impressive 5,000 real rats were involved in the filmmaking process, ensuring authenticity in the more disturbing scenes, including the harrowing moment when Anna is seen on the ground while rats feed on her body. This commitment to realism highlights both the eerie atmosphere and the lengths to which the cast and crew went to create a truly unsettling viewing experience.
Since its release on December 25, 2024, Nosferatu has quickly become recognized for its dark themes, unsettling imagery, and depictions of violence, with Anna’s encounter with the rats being just the beginning of her tragic fate. The film escalates in intensity as viewers witness Anna’s horror unfold, including scenes of Count Orlok draining the blood from one of her children while the other lies lifeless nearby.
Analyzing Anna’s Arc in Nosferatu
The Impact of Anna’s Final Scene
Anna emerges as one of the most innocent figures in Nosferatu, embodying relatable qualities as a mother and a devoted wife in the 1830s. Initially, she aligns herself with her husband and struggles to accept Ellen’s claims about the supernatural forces behind the plague. Her dismissive view of Ellen’s sadness as mere nostalgia reflects a common maternal instinct to reassure her frightened children against what she believes to be mere fantasy. However, Anna’s reality is shattered when faced with the truth of the tangible evil pursuing them.
Despite their differing beliefs, the bond between Anna and Ellen remains steadfast until Anna confronts Count Orlok in her harrowing final moments. This climactic scene serves as a heartbreaking conclusion to Anna’s narrative, ushering her transition from skeptic to an anguished mother witnessing the brutal reality of her situation. The emotional turmoil she experiences transforms her from a non-believer confronted with an unimaginable horror into a bereaved mother grappling with her impending doom.
