One Path of Exile 2 Feature: Progression Forward but Setbacks Ahead

Overview of Path of Exile 2 Features

  • Path of Exile 2 boasts significantly enhanced graphics and gameplay mechanics, positioning it among the top action RPGs available today.
  • Compared to its rivals, such as Diablo 4, the game’s reliance on manual item identification can hinder the overall gaming experience.
  • The introduction of an auto-identification system could greatly elevate Path of Exile 2, removing the necessity for Scrolls of Wisdom and manual item checks.

Path of Exile 2 remains in early access, with only a few weeks since its launch. The developers, Grinding Gear Games (GGG), have already begun making adjustments to skills and gameplay elements. With remarkable advancements in graphics and a more fluid gameplay experience—especially in high-level content—Path of Exile 2 has quickly established itself as a leader in the action RPG genre. The introduction of new classes and Ascendancies promises to enhance player experience even further. However, not all changes have been beneficial when evaluated against contemporary gaming standards.

A notable aspect of the comparison between Path of Exile 2 and Diablo 4 lies in their approaches to item identification. While Diablo 4 features an automated system that identifies loot as soon as it’s picked up, Path of Exile 2 requires players to identify items manually using Scrolls of Wisdom or by engaging with non-player characters (NPCs) for assistance. This difference illustrates a broader divergence in gameplay mechanics between these two action RPGs, rooted in their shared inspirations from classic titles like Diablo 2.

The Double-Edged Sword of the ‘Identify Items’ Mechanic

Path of Exile 2’s feature allowing players to have items identified via the Hooded One (or Doryani) marks a step forward from the original game, where all identification relied solely on Scrolls of Wisdom. However, this mechanic leads to a pertinent question: why can’t the game simply eliminate the identification process altogether?

Unlike its predecessor, Path of Exile 2 introduces a limited version of the identification mechanic, yet it still requires players to engage in the same inventory management that action RPGs are known for. Traditionally, unidentified items reveal only their base type and rarity. In contrast, in Diablo 4, players automatically gain access to identified items, allowing for greater inventory fluidity, whether players choose to discard, trade, or store them.

Path of Exile 2 Could Benefit from Diablo 4’s Auto-Identification System

In Path of Exile 2, players are more inclined to focus on collecting orbs and gold or Waystones during endgame activities, often overlooking high-value items that drop. During the game’s campaign or while approaching the endgame, it could be advantageous to utilize NPCs for item identification or carry a stack of Scrolls of Wisdom for convenience. Nevertheless, this dual-system seems redundant considering the Identify Items function exists. The ideal scenario would be to streamline this process altogether.

Whether through the Identify Items mechanic or with Scrolls of Wisdom, players find themselves taking repetitive steps to achieve the same goal, which ultimately disrupts the gameplay flow. To enhance the gaming experience, Path of Exile 2 should consider adopting Diablo 4’s auto-identification method, rendering both the Identify Items function and Scrolls of Wisdom unnecessary.
