Warning: The following contains major spoilers for Only Murders in the Building season 4 episode 4.
Ending Explained: What’s Going On with Dudenoff and the West Towers?
In this episode of Only Murders in the Building season 4, Mabel (played by Selena Gomez) persists in her efforts to lure Dudenoff out by squatting in his apartment. However, when she was called away with Charles (played by Steve Martin) and Oliver (played by Martin Short) to investigate the circumstances surrounding Sazz’s death, she left Howard (played by Michael Cyril Creighton) to guard the apartment.
Unfortunately for Mabel, Howard opted to leave for an audition, allowing an eccentric group of West Tower residents—including the Soup family, Vince, and Rudy—to enter the space with their own agenda. Upon returning from their investigative outing, Mabel discovered Howard in their building, which spurred her urgency to confront Dudenoff. Entering the apartment, she caught the residents in the midst of moving furniture.
When she accused them of being a cult, the residents realized they had no choice but to divulge their “scheme” to Mabel, indicating that she might be part of it. They revealed that Dudenoff was the owner of the West Tower and a retired professor residing in Portugal, renting the apartments for a mere fraction of market value—”peanuts,”as they put it.
This arrangement allowed Dudenoff to live lavishly in Portugal while the West Tower residents paid him a meager $200 a month in rent. Now, they were plotting to sublet the apartments in order to make some profit of their own, which piqued Mabel’s interest in their scheme.
Who is the Voice on the Radio?
The prior episode suggested a darker undertone concerning the murder of Sazz, an implication reinforced by the woman’s voice on the radio. This episode clarified that the voice belonged to Rudy’s paranoid ex-girlfriend, who had been trying repeatedly to reach him through ham radio interference.
This revelation implies that the West Tower residents are not complicit in the murder; rather, they are an unusual group of individuals with their own unique interests.
Sazz’s Dream and the Final Twist
In season 4, episode 4 of Only Murders in the Building, the narrative explores Sazz’s life ambitions as well as the physical challenges she faced due to injuries. Charles realized, through various exchanges, that Sazz was unhappy in their one-sided relationship and was determined to pursue her dream of establishing Sazz’s Impact Academy, a trampoline park where she could also impart knowledge on becoming a stunt performer.
Remarkably, Sazz had even secured land for her academy, a fact that struck Charles when he was accidentally hit on the head by Ben Glenroy’s body double (played by Paul Rudd). The trio consequently ventured to the location Sazz had bought for her academy, only to be met by Bev Melon, the producer from Paramount Pictures, who threatened them with a gun as the episode abruptly concluded, leaving many unsettling questions unresolved.
Only Murders in the Building season 4, episode 4 is currently available for streaming on Hulu.
