Viggo Mortensen: A Tribute to His Iconic Roles and Realism in Eastern Promises
Viggo Mortensen, renowned for his role as Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings, has garnered acclaim from a Russian mafia expert for his exemplary performance in the film Eastern Promises. While Mortensen’s portrayal of the valiant Aragorn remains a highlight of Peter Jackson’s acclaimed trilogy, discussions are circulating regarding his return to the role in the anticipated film The Hunt for Gollum, directed by Andy Serkis and expected in 2026.
Although Mortensen is widely recognized for his role in The Lord of the Rings, his impressive body of work has earned him three Academy Award nominations. His most recent nod came for playing Tony Lip in the 2018 film Green Book, which went on to win an Academy Award for Best Picture. Mortensen also gained critical acclaim for his role in the post-apocalyptic drama The Road, released in 2009, which is based on Cormac McCarthy’s novel.
Viggo Mortensen’s Acclaimed Performance in Eastern Promises
Accurate Portrayal of the Russian Mafia
Eastern Promises, released in 2007, stands out in Mortensen’s career, notably for its realism and attention to detail in depicting the Russian mafia. His role as Nikolai Luzhin not only earned him his first Academy Award nomination, but it also distinguished the film as one of his best performances. Set against a backdrop of crime and secrecy, Mortensen’s character becomes embroiled in the dangerous world of the Russian mafia, as he attempts to navigate and protect the truth uncovered by midwife Anna (played by Naomi Watts).
Acclaimed for its authenticity, the film’s attention to cultural nuances impresses many experts. In a recent video from Insider, Joe Serio, a former CIA agent and Russian mafia expert, highlights the film’s accuracy in its portrayal of Nikolai’s character and the intricate details that define the Russian mafia.
You see the gangsters, the mafia walking into a restaurant in London. When you talk about the Russian mafia, and their expansion, these guys, number one, are all over the world. One of their main hubs is London. They’ve bought up tons of real estate to launder funds from Russia. They frequently used restaurants as meeting places. This scene was done particularly well.
The tattoos in the Russian underworld are significant; they reflect one’s status and history in prison. The boss’s first comment recognizes Nikolai’s time in Siberia just from his appearance. The tattoos communicate everything from one’s rank in the hierarchy to their criminal history. This scene accurately portrays these nuances and prepares Nikolai for his new role as a “thief in law,” a Vor V Zakone.
However, I was not entirely in favor of the bathhouse scene’s portrayal. Traditionally, bathhouses were considered safe spaces; violent acts were generally avoided there. Also notable is that knives were not the typical tools for mafia hits; historically, axes were more common due to agricultural practices in Russia.
