Overview
- Blizzard has re-engaged the former lead designer of Overwatch 2’s Invasion PvE missions.
- This move has revived fans’ hopes for new PvE gameplay features.
- The Avatar: The Last Airbender crossover event will conclude on December 31.
In a notable development, Blizzard has again contracted Jorge Murillo, the original lead of the PvE missions for Overwatch 2. This rehire has sparked excitement among the game’s community, renewing optimism about the possible resurgence of PvE content. Currently, Overwatch 2 players are enjoying various events, including the festive Winter Wonderland modes, the innovative 6v6 role queue, and the ongoing collaboration with Avatar: The Last Airbender. Adding to the excitement, Season 14 recently welcomed its latest tank hero, Hazard, equipped to engage in unique combat maneuvers.
Historically, PvE modes have played a limited role within the Overwatch franchise. The official launch of Overwatch 2 in 2022 was anticipated to enhance the significance of PvE gameplay. However, fans were met with disappointment when the game debuted without many of the promised PvE features, which were a significant factor in the creation of the sequel. While the Invasion PvE missions introduced in Season 6, which launched in August 2023, offered some paid content, the excitement was short-lived. Following a brief return to PvE, Blizzard announced the cessation of any future PvE developments for the game. As it stands, the only annual PvE experience players can count on is the Halloween Terror event, which features the fan-favorite Junkenstein’s Revenge mode.

Murillo’s return has instigated a buzz among the Overwatch 2 community, igniting hopes for the introduction of new PvE modes. However, it is important to note that Murillo’s experience at Blizzard is not exclusively focused on PvE, as he has also contributed to PvP development. This suggests he might have been brought back to enhance PvP aspects, such as the design of new maps. While there is a possibility of new PvE content being developed, it is likely that the earlier high expectations set around Overwatch 2’s launch may not be fully realized. Blizzard may instead aim to expand its collection of seasonal PvE limited-time events, including Junkenstein’s Revenge.
If more PvE missions are indeed on the horizon for Overwatch 2, fans may have to manage their expectations as the release date could be some time away. In the meantime, the Avatar: The Last Airbender crossover event is slated to conclude on December 31. Players will also have the opportunity to continue enjoying Winter Wonderland until January 6, which coincides with the expected end of the 6v6 role queue. Following this, Season 14 is projected to carry on for approximately another month, concluding early in February.
