Game Director Aaron Keller confirmed that this extension is a direct response to the mode’s immense popularity, which has surged since its reintroduction. Players are expressing a strong desire for this mode to remain a long-term option within the game.
6v6 was first introduced during the Overwatch Classic event in November of the previous year and immediately captured players’ enthusiasm. Despite its short-lived initial appearance, fans quickly recognized it as one of Overwatch 2’s most engaging game modes. After its first brief stint, Blizzard decided to reintroduce the 6v6 role queue playtest at the commencement of Season 14, with a planned run from December 17 to January 6, albeit without the vintage hero abilities that featured in the Classic event.
In light of the sustained interest, Aaron Keller announced via social media that the 6v6 mode’s second playtest will now continue for the foreseeable future. Although the exact end date remains unspecified, the 6v6 experimental mode is expected to transition into the Arcade section soon. Players can continue enjoying 12-player matches until mid-season, after which the mode will shift to an open queue format, permitting a minimum of one to a maximum of three heroes from each class.
