Overwatch 2 makes its much-anticipated return to China on February 19, 2024. An open technical test for players is scheduled for January 8, ushering fans back into the game after a prolonged absence. This restart enables Chinese players to experience all the heroes, game modes, and features they missed across the twelve seasons that were unavailable during the server downtime.

Return Details: Overwatch 2 is Back

The disruption began when the partnership agreement between Blizzard and NetEase ended on January 24, 2023. This unfortunate turn of events rendered almost all Blizzard games inaccessible in the country, including Overwatch 2. Fortunately, by April 2024, the two companies reconciled, initiating efforts to restore Blizzard’s gaming portfolio in China, a key market for the gaming industry.

As the excitement builds, a brief video announcement from Walter Kong, the global general manager of the Overwatch franchise, confirmed the game’s revival on February 19, just in time for the start of Overwatch 2 Season 15. The upcoming technical test from January 8 to 15 will allow Chinese players to engage with all 42 heroes, including the new tank, Hazard, introduced in Season 14, as well as the classic 6v6 game mode.

The Resurgence of Overwatch Esports in 2025

To further amplify this return, the Overwatch esports scene is also set for a significant revival. In 2025, the Overwatch Championship Series will feature a dedicated region for Chinese players, offering them a platform to compete. Celebrating this revitalization, the first live Championship Series event will be hosted in Hangzhou, symbolizing China’s re-emergence in the Overwatch community.

The hiatus has left Chinese players eager for updates. They last attempted to game during Overwatch 2 Season 2, when Ramattra was the newest addition. Since then, six new characters have been released, namely Lifeweaver, Illari, Mauga, Venture, Juno, and Hazard. Additionally, significant game modes such as Flashpoint and Clash and new maps like Antarctic Peninsula, Samoa, and Runasapi became available after their server closure. Players will also find story missions from the Invasion expansion and numerous hero rebalances awaiting them.

However, one challenge remains. The celebrated Lunar New Year event in 2025 will conclude right before Overwatch 2 resumes, potentially causing players to miss out on exclusive in-game festivities, including new skins and the Prop Hunt mode. Fans are hopeful that Blizzard will offer a special version of this beloved event to coincide with their return, allowing players to immerse themselves in both their cultural celebration and the excitement of new content.
