Niantic has recently unveiled the highly anticipated New Year’s 2025 event for Pokemon GO, taking place from December 30 to January 1. This event promises players an array of exciting bonuses, along with frequent encounters of various Pokemon as well as new rewards.
As a free-to-play augmented reality mobile game developed by Niantic in collaboration with Nintendo and The Pokemon Company, Pokemon GO started with approximately 150 Pokemon species. Today, it boasts a diverse roster of around 870 Pokemon and has seen over a billion downloads globally, generating significant revenue. With the New Year’s event on the horizon, players can expect thrilling features and opportunities to enhance their gameplay.

- The event kicks off on Monday, December 30, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. and concludes on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, at 8:00 p.m. local time.
In addition to exciting XP rewards, players can participate in various raid challenges. One-star raids will feature Pikachu in a festive snowflake beanie, while costumed favorites like Raticate and Wobbuffet will return in three-star raids, both donning party hats. Players fortunate enough to encounter these Pokemon may also discover their shiny variants. Trainers can also engage in event-themed Field Research tasks, which offer opportunities to meet costumed Pokemon and collect Stardust. Furthermore, a paid Timed Research option will provide players with valuable items, including three Premium Battle Passes and chances to encounter special festive Pokemon like Pikachu and Wobbuffet.
During the event, players will have the ability to purchase and gift tickets to friends who have attained the Great Friends level or higher. Note, however, that these ticket purchases are non-refundable, so players should utilize them before the event concludes to avoid losing them. Additionally, players can participate in PokeStop Showcases to showcase their event-themed Pokemon. Niantic is also introducing a limited-time Ultra Holiday Box, which features a Pokemon Storage upgrade, an Item Bag upgrade, and 17 Rare Candies.
The announcement of the New Year’s 2025 event coincides with an exciting collaboration between Pokemon GO and McDonald’s, which runs from December 16 to December 22. This partnership allows players to access exclusive benefits, including Lure Modules and Raid Battles at sponsored PokeStops and Gyms located at participating McDonald’s throughout the United States. With so many thrilling features in store, Pokemon GO players have a lot to look forward to as they ring in the New Year.
