According to Serebii.net on X, the Pokemon TCG Pocket has surpassed 10 million downloads globally. The title made its official launch on October 30, 2024, following a month of exclusivity for New Zealand players. Currently, it is available solely on Android and iOS platforms, and the Nintendo Switch version was not included at the initial release.
In this new initiative, The Pokemon Company aims to transition the beloved physical card game—encompassing collecting, trading, and battling—into a more accessible digital form that appeals to both casual and seasoned players.
With over six million pre-registrations prior to its launch, it’s clear that Pokemon TCG Pocket is swiftly gaining popularity among users around the world.
Pokemon TCG Pocket captivates millions through an innovative expansion and simplified combat mechanics
Currently, the game features a single expansion, titled Genetic Apex. This unique set, which is not available in any physical card form yet, prominently showcases the Original 151 Pokemon along with the eight Gym Leaders from Kanto. Players can currently choose from three Booster Packs: Pikachu, Charizard, and Mewtwo.
As per Bulbapedia, the artwork utilized in the game is derived from Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen. The Kanto theme resonates through the in-game Genetic Apex Themed Missions, like the Viridian Forest collection, which urges players to gather cards associated with Pokemon found in Viridian Forest.
The gaming community has reacted positively to TCG Pocket, evident from its impressive ratings of 4.6 on the Play Store and 4.9 on the App Store. My personal experience within the game revealed that the mechanics are user-friendly for newcomers and do not mandate spending real money to enjoy the game.
Within less than a day, I successfully gathered over 100 cards, including the highly sought-after Mewtwo EX (crown rarity). With its engaging content and straightforward gameplay, it is likely that the game’s popularity will continue to ascend among gamers, regardless of their experience level.
Currently, the main issue reported pertains to iOS 18.1 users, who have encountered difficulties as the app fails to launch and instead sends players back to their home screens. Fortunately, the official X channel has confirmed that developers are actively looking into this problem.
