The anticipation for the reveal of the Nintendo Switch successor, commonly referred to as the Switch 2, is reaching a fever pitch among fans, even though an official announcement date has yet to be confirmed. As excitement builds, speculation is rampant within the gaming community, with many hoping to see a host of beloved titles featured on the new console. Unsurprisingly, a new entry in the Legend of Zelda series consistently ranks high on fans’ wish lists.
The Legend of Zelda franchise, one of Nintendo’s crown jewels, has established a rich legacy since its inception. With at least one new game released every one to two years since 1998, the series continues to hold a special place in the hearts of gamers. Given the exceptional quality of recent titles, it’s no wonder fans are keen to have a new Zelda adventure at the Switch 2’s launch. However, while the arrival of a new mainline Zelda game at launch might be improbable, there remains potential for some form of Zelda title to grace the console on release day.
Could Switch 2 Launch With a Zelda Game?
Mainline Zelda Title Unlikely for Launch
Historically, both the Wii and Nintendo Switch launched alongside major Zelda titles, featuring Zelda: Twilight Princess and Zelda: Breath of the Wild, respectively. However, it seems improbable that the impending Switch 2 will be accompanied by a new mainline Zelda release. The most recent titles, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, have only recently launched, raising doubts about the readiness of a new core game for the Switch 2.
With hints pointing toward a potential launch date as early as March 2025, the timeline poses challenges; Tears of the Kingdom required around six years of development, while Echoes of Wisdom likely took approximately five years. This suggests that a new mainline Zelda title would not debut with the Switch 2.
Alternative Zelda Titles That Could Launch
While the absence of a new mainline Zelda title is probable, fans can still look forward to other Zelda-related games potentially gracing the launch line-up. There have been persistent rumors over the last few years about remastered ports of fan-favorites like Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, which could make their long-awaited debut with the Switch 2.
Additionally, speculation has circulated regarding a remake of Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, possibly in development for the Switch 2. Furthermore, whispers of a remaster of Breath of the Wild have also surfaced, offering even more hope to fans eager for fresh content.
If remakes and remasters do not materialize, Nintendo might opt for a revival of past spinoff titles. The Hyrule Warriors series, created by Omega Force, presents a suitable option for consideration, especially since it has been four years since the last installment. Alternatively, a sequel to Cadence of Hyrule, developed in collaboration with Brace Yourself Games, could excite the player base.
