As video game adaptations continue to gain traction, it was not surprising that Prime Video chose to pursue an interpretation of the beloved PlayStation title, God of War. Meanwhile, the project’s development has shifted unexpectedly.

In December 2022, Prime Video officially greenlit the God of War TV series, a collaboration between Amazon Studios, Sony Pictures Television, and PlayStation Productions. Rafe Judkins was initially brought on as the showrunner; he is also known for his work on another significant series for Prime Video, The Wheel of Time. Additionally, producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus, recognized for their role in The Expanse, joined the project as executive producers. Cory Barlog, the franchise’s long-time creative director and producer, has also been involved to supervise the television adaptation.

As of January 2024, while writing for the God of War series was in progress, the project encountered obstacles. According to a Deadline report from last week, Prime Video has opted to overhaul the series, resulting in the departures of Judkins, Ostby, and Fergus. This trio left despite generating multiple scripts that were reportedly well-received by both Sony and Prime Video, with the shakeup attributed to “a new creative direction.”A follow-up report on Tuesday revealed that Star Trek creator Ronald D. Moore has now taken on the role of showrunner.

The God of War franchise boasts nearly 20 years of gaming history, presenting a rich tapestry of storytelling opportunities for the television adaptation. Initial indications suggested that Prime Video intended to center the series on the 2018 entry in the franchise, which explores Norse mythology. This narrative portrays Kratos as he moves past his violent Greek past and builds a new life in Midgard alongside his young son, Atreus. Their adventure centers around fulfilling Atreus’ mother’s last request to scatter her ashes from the highest peak of the nine realms, forging an epic journey that strengthens their bond as father and son.

The Norse segment of the God of War series has received significant acclaim, with the 2018 title and its sequel, God of War Ragnarok, achieving near-universal praise. However, these games transpire later in Kratos’ overarching tale. It remains a possibility that the new direction set by Prime Video might lead the series to explore Kratos’ origins in Greece first, potentially progressing to the Norse saga in future seasons if the series enjoys success.

Current reports indicate that God of War is considered a “vital asset”for Prime Video, suggesting that its development will be prioritized. With the successful reception of other video game adaptations on television, notably HBO’s The Last of Us and Fallout’s first season (which Prime Video also produced), it’s clear that video game intellectual properties are highly sought after in Hollywood. A well-executed adaptation of God of War has the potential to not only meet but exceed the standards set by existing high-caliber video game adaptations, making it unlikely for Prime Video to let the series stall for long.
