It’s become a familiar narrative: Donald Trump persistently minimizes the events of the insurrection. Once again, we see him dismissing the seriousness of the situation and weaving conspiracy theories into his narrative.
In a recent discussion held at the Economic Club of Chicago, Trump engaged in an interview with Bloomberg Editor-in-Chief John Micklethwait. Their dialogue included an inquiry about whether Trump would peacefully accept defeat in the event he lost the 2024 election, a reference to the turmoil that unfolded during the 2020 election when the Capitol was breached on January 6, 2021. Trump asserted that he had accepted the outcome during the previous election.
“There was love and peace, yet some individuals proceeded to the Capitol,” Trump remarked. “Odd occurrences transpired there, with police appearing to usher people into the Capitol.” Here, he refers to the purported police involvement that allegedly permitted rioters entrance into the premises unlawfully. The dialogue continued, with Micklethwait challenging Trump’s claims while Trump deflected by suggesting Micklethwait had never been supportive of him.
However, Trump not only misrepresented the number of attendees (he stated merely 500-700 supporters entered the Capitol) but also falsely claimed that no firearms were brought into the building. Reports indicate that numerous participants from the crowd of over 1500 had weapons, with accounts stating at least one individual discharged a firearm into the air. “None of those individuals possessed a gun; no one was killed except for Ashli Babbitt,” he claimed.
Scott MacFarlane, a CBS News Congressional Correspondent, verified Trump’s statements via his X account: “There are over 1500 defendants from January 6, with several accused of brandishing firearms during the riot. One is specifically accused of discharging a weapon into the air.”
Trump just now: “500 to 700 people went to the Capitol”on January 6.. “nobody had a gun”There are 1500+ Jan 6 defendants so far. Multiple defendants are accused of carrying guns in the mob. One is accused of firing his gun into the air

An Ongoing Pattern with Trump and JD Vance
Recently, their latest assertion on the campaign trail claims that Trump overseen a peaceful transition of power after the 2020 election. JD Vance, Trump’s vice-presidential choice, emphasized that Trump had indeed facilitated a peaceful transfer, attributing the insurrection to merely “a few knuckleheads.” However, it is documented that at least 1500 MAGA supporters participated in the January 6 events, and previously, Trump had referred to these “knuckleheads” as patriots.
“Donald Trump did encourage individuals to protest peacefully,” Vance said in response to a reporter’s question about his stance on the riot during a rally in Johnstown. “He had the right to urge peaceful protest, and the blame for the actions of a few knuckleheads lies with them, not on him.”
The effort to reframe the January 6 narrative is failing to deceive the public. Those who witnessed the events unfold live recall Trump inciting the crowd, urging them to make their voices heard at the Capitol. “I know that all of you here will soon be marching to the Capitol to peacefully and patriotically express your opinions,” Trump stated in his address, leading to a substantial number of supporters proceeding to the Capitol.
Trump and Vance aim to downplay the harsh realities of January 6, but the memory of that day remains vivid.
