For more than three decades, Blink-182 has been at the forefront of the pop-punk genre, renowned for their unique combination of humor, energetic rhythms, and emotionally resonant hooks. With a discography that includes nine studio albums and a plethora of additional releases, their body of work is extensive. Yet, perplexingly, there hasn’t been a live performance of any track from their 2001 album, Take Your Pants Off and Jacket (TYPOAJ), in over 23 years. Fortunately, Mark Hoppus has hinted that this may soon change.
Released on Interscope Records, Take Your Pants Off and Jacket is Blink-182’s fourth studio album and a follow-up to their groundbreaking hit, Enema of the State. The album includes three singles that reached the top ten on modern rock charts: “The Rock Show,””First Date,”and “Stay Together for the Kids.”Notably, TYPOAJ made history as the first punk rock album to feature songs that have topped the Billboard Top 200.
The band formed in 1992 and has maintained an active touring schedule. However, the challenge of showcasing their entire catalog has often left tracks like “Online Songs”overlooked. This has left dedicated fans, as well as newer listeners, yearning for the deep cuts that sit alongside the band’s more mainstream hits.
Blink-182’s Long Absence of “Online Songs”in Live Performances
Mastering Hits While Sparingly Rotating Deep Cuts
As indicated by data from Setlist.fm, Blink-182 boasts impressive statistics regarding their live performances. Their most frequently played tracks—”Dammit,””What’s My Age Again?,”and “All the Small Things”—each featuring more than 790 live renditions. Unfortunately, this means that cherished tracks from earlier albums and hidden gems from their major releases are often sidelined in favor of commercial hits.
Interestingly, “Online Songs”stands out due to its rarity in live sets. Despite the common belief that it has never been played live, the band performed it just twice during the summer of 2001, shortly after the album’s release. This is particularly odd considering the song’s narrative about Josie, a character from their earlier album, Dude Ranch, coupled with its vibrant guitars and Mark Hoppus’s iconic vocal delivery.
Although fans have lamented the absence of “Online Songs”from live shows, hope was reignited when bassist and co-founder Mark Hoppus expressed interest in performing TYPOAJ in its entirety.
Is There a Potential Take Off Your Pants & Jacket Anniversary Tour on the Horizon?
Mark Hoppus Open to Playing TYPOAJ in Full
Attending a Blink-182 concert has always been an unpredictable venture, given their various side projects, internal dynamics, and the passage of time. During a recent Twitch stream, Hoppus revealed that he would be enthusiastic about performing the entirety of TYPOAJ in the near future. But what could this imply for fans?
This announcement raises the possibility of an anniversary tour. The band traditionally plays entire albums in celebration of significant milestones, such as the 10th anniversary of Untitled in 2003 and the 20th anniversary of Enema of the State in 2019. With no anniversary tour planned for Untitled in 2023, and the band currently enjoying some downtime after extensive touring, the groundwork seems ideal for a celebration marking the 25th anniversary of Hoppus’s fourth favorite album.
Regardless of the reasoning behind Blink-182’s long-standing omission of “Online Songs,”the moment may soon arrive for this much-loved yet underperformed track. If trends continue, fans might anticipate a TYPOAJ anniversary tour in 2026 or at least a series of shows that prominently feature the band’s fourth studio album.
