Rare’s Exciting Plans for a Spectacular Start to 2025

Rare, one of the most esteemed names in the gaming industry, was established nearly four decades ago. The company initially focused on developing various licensed games, including popular adaptations of game shows like Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune, as well as titles inspired by Sesame Street and WWF. However, Rare truly made its mark during the 1990s and early 2000s with iconic series such as Battletoads, Donkey Kong Country, Killer Instinct, GoldenEye 007, Banjo-Kazooie, Perfect Dark, and Viva Piñata.

During its peak years, Rare consistently released between three to five games annually. In stark contrast, the studio’s recent output has diminished significantly, with the last new game, Sea of Thieves, launched in 2018. Excitingly, Rare appears to be gearing up for a return with new projects on the horizon, potentially heralding a fresh start for the developer.

Everwild’s Development Saga

Reportedly in development since 2014, Everwild was officially unveiled in November 2019 during Xbox’s closing X0 presentation. The debut cinematic trailer introduced audiences to the game’s enchanting atmosphere and environment, showcasing a group of mystical travelers who utilize their bond with nature to navigate through adverse weather.

However, following its announcement, news about Everwild went quiet. In June 2021, notable industry insiders, including Jeff Grubb from VentureBeat and Andy Robinson from VGC, disclosed that development had been reset due to the exit of the original creative director, Simon Woodroffe. Subsequently, Gregg Mayles, a long-time veteran at Rare, assumed the role of creative director, indicating a positive shift in the project’s progress.

After this change, updates on Everwild were virtually non-existent—until October 2023, when Phil Spencer shared a post on Threads featuring himself alongside several Rare developers, commenting, “Great day at Rare, hanging out with the developers at their desks and playing Everwild.” This interaction reignited enthusiasm among fans, confirming that the game is still actively being developed.

Insight into Rare’s Latest Everwild Teaser

The recent post by Phil Spencer has sparked a renewed sense of hope for Everwild enthusiasts, affirming its active development status. This sentiment was further amplified when Rare posted a charming virtual holiday greeting on Twitter, which appeared to subtly reference Everwild, suggesting the studio’s ongoing engagement with the project.

While this does not guarantee that Rare is ready for a formal announcement or reveal, it is an encouraging sign that the team is publicly acknowledging the game once again.

Prospective Reveal at Xbox’s 2025 Showcases

If Rare is prepared to showcase more of Everwild, there are several upcoming opportunities in 2025. Although it remains unconfirmed, an Xbox Developer Direct is rumored to return in January 2025. Given that Everwild is an Xbox Game Studios title, its presence at such an event would be fitting.

Additionally, the summer showcase could also serve as an excellent platform for Rare to briefly reveal Everwild. Even if the developer isn’t ready for a full re-reveal, a teaser trailer could help reignite public interest in the title and keep fans eager for what lies ahead.
