WARNING: SPOILERS ahead for Dexter: Original Sin episode 1!
The highly anticipated prequel series, Dexter: Original Sin, depicts a formative moment in Patrick Gibson’s portrayal of Dexter Morgan as he embarks on his first kill and retains a poignant trophy from the experience. Crafted by Clyde Phillips, the visionary behind Dexter: New Blood, this series explores a young Dexter navigating his darker impulses under the mentorship of his adoptive father, Harry. Through Harry’s moral code, Dexter seeks to fulfill his violent urges while evading detection.
After Michael C. Hall reprised his iconic role as the charismatic, vigilante serial killer in 2021’s Dexter: New Blood, he returns to lend his voice as Dexter’s inner thoughts in Original Sin. Set in Miami in 1991, this prequel marks the beginning of Dexter’s journey with the Miami Metro PD. The series is expected to delve into several anticipated kills established in the original series lore. Furthermore, an additional series, Dexter: Resurrection, is slated for a summer 2025 release, with Hall also set to return.

Blood Slides: A Later Development in Dexter’s Journey
No Blood Slide for Nurse Mary
In the premiere of Dexter: Original Sin, viewers witness Dexter execute his first kill after realizing that Nurse Mary has been harming patients and attempted to take Harry’s life while he was recovering from a heart attack. This sequence mirrors a pivotal scene from the original series where Dexter confronts Nurse Mary in her home. Interestingly, while Dexter is known for collecting blood samples from each of his victims, he refrains from doing so following the murder of Nurse Mary.
The original Dexter series reveals that long before he chronicled his kills through blood slides, he had already taken many lives. This aligns with the characterization of Nurse Mary in Original Sin. In fact, it wasn’t until he killed Alex Timmons, several years down the line, that Dexter began his practice of saving blood slides. Timmons is featured in Dexter Season 1, Episode 6, titled “Return to Sender,” marking one of Dexter’s earliest confirmed kills. Given the time jump, it’s unlikely Timmons will make an appearance in Original Sin.
Potential Consequences of Dexter’s Ill-Advised Trophy
A Rookie Mistake in Keeping a Trophy
In the first episode of Original Sin, Dexter may have made his initial rookie blunder by choosing to keep a pair of gold earrings from Nurse Mary, aiming to commemorate his first kill. He hides these earrings in his room and anticipates that retaining such evidence could lead to dire consequences. As the series progresses, it’s likely he will have to maneuver to conceal these traces to avoid exposure, emphasizing why he would refrain from keeping trophies until he resorts to blood slides later on in his journey.
