WARNING: SPOILERS ahead for Dexter: Original Sin episode 1.
The much-anticipated prequel series Dexter: Original Sin, which explores the roots of the iconic character Dexter Morgan, intriguingly omits Maria LaGuerta in its pilot episode. Created by Clyde Phillips, known for his work on Dexter: New Blood, this series delves into Dexter’s life after college, highlighting his struggle with the “dark passenger”through the lessons imparted by his adoptive father, Harry. Dexter attempts to balance his violent impulses by adhering to Harry’s moral code, all while evading capture.
Michael C. Hall reprises his celebrated role as the charming yet sinister vigilante, returning as Dexter’s internal monologue and narrator. Set against the vibrant backdrop of Miami in 1991, this series marks the early days of Dexter’s tenure with Miami Metro PD. Fans can expect the series to touch upon several anticipated story arcs already woven into Dexter’s extensive lore. Additionally, a new series titled Dexter: Resurrection is slated for release in the summer of 2025, with Hall set to return once again.

Maria LaGuerta: The Notable Absence in Episode One
Speculations on Her Absence at Miami Metro PD
In a surprising twist, Maria LaGuerta does not make her appearance in the premiere episode of Dexter: Original Sin. Interestingly, she is the only returning character from the original series confirmed to appear in this prequel. In contrast, both Vince Masuka and Angel Batista make notable appearances early in the episode, alongside key characters such as Dexter Morgan, Debra Morgan, and Harry Morgan, played by Patrick Gibson.
The most plausible reasoning for LaGuerta’s absence is that she has yet to be hired by Miami Metro at this point in the storyline. As a character known for her flirtatious interactions with Dexter in the first season, there is significant interest surrounding how her presence will influence his narrative arc in Original Sin.
Anticipating LaGuerta’s Entry into Miami Metro
Potential Arrival Linked to Serial Killer Investigation
As the narrative unfolds, Dexter: Original Sin and its depiction of Miami Metro may not fully resonate with the essence of the original series until we see LaGuerta’s character integrated into future episodes. It is possible that her introduction will coincide with the emergence of a season-long antagonist and that she will play a crucial role in the pursuit of a serial killer, a storyline intricately tied to Dexter’s own journey. While other beloved characters like Sergeant Doakes remain unconfirmed for this prequel, LaGuerta’s eventual involvement seems imminent.
