Among music fandoms, few have exhibited as much patience as the followers of My Chemical Romance (MCR). Despite the band disbanding more than ten years ago, dedicated listeners held on to the hope of a reunion. Miraculously, their perseverance has been rewarded in several significant ways since MCR’s breakup.
While it has been over a decade since My Chemical Romance officially disbanded, the first hints of a reunion came five years ago with a performance in Los Angeles in December 2019. The subsequent planned tour faced delays due to the pandemic, but when it finally launched, it reignited the world’s passion for the talents of Gerard, Mikey, Frank, and Ray. In addition, MCR released their first single in a decade two years ago, heightening expectations for new music and solidifying the belief that this reunion could lead to a renaissance for the band.
However, fans are still awaiting the long-anticipated album that was initially set for release a decade ago. In fact, ten years ago, My Chemical Romance was on the verge of following up their album “Danger Days”with a fifth studio release. But what led to its cancellation, and how likely are we to see a new MCR album soon?
The Abandonment of MCR’s Fifth Album
The Paper Kingdom: What Happened?
In 2010, My Chemical Romance released “Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys,”which would become their last album before their unexpected split three years later. The intended follow-up, dubbed The Paper Kingdom, was planned to be a grand farewell to their fans. Frank Iero discussed the band’s commitment to this new project in a 2012 interview, noting that they had even constructed a new studio for its recording. Among the tracks conceived during this period was “Fake Your Death.”
Sadly, the band’s breakup in March 2013 derailed these plans. During the Sydney Graphic Festival in October 2013, Gerard Way revealed that one of the planned tracks would address the sorrow of parents supporting their grieving children. However, given the deeply emotional nature of the content, it profoundly affected Way, contributing to the decision to abandon the album due to its overwhelming darkness.

On May 12, 2022, My Chemical Romance released “The Foundations of Decay,”marking their first new music in several years. However, despite many misconceptions linking it to The Paper Kingdom, the song itself was not intended for the aborted fifth album; it was created during the reunion era.

Before the band’s initial break, My Chemical Romance released a compilation album titled May Death Never Stop You, almost exactly one year after their disbandment. This greatest hits collection included favorites and the single “Fake Your Death,”which was crafted as part of the fifth album’s vision. Five years post-breakup, MCR surprised fans with a reunion show in December 2019, initially believed to be a one-time event, which transformed into a full-scale world tour.
The planned reunion tour in 2020 was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to postponements until 2022, with a finale show in Japan in 2023. Subsequently, MCR headlined the 2024 When We Were Young Festival alongside Fall Out Boy, performing the entire “Black Parade”album. Outside of touring, the members have engaged in various projects; Gerard Way has been successful in comic book writing, notably for The Umbrella Academy, while Frank Iero has been actively performing with L.S. Dunes, which is set to release their second album in January 2025.

Recently, MCR has sparked speculation among fans by sharing cryptic posts on their Instagram, featuring captions like “Opera”and “Good Boy.”This has led to conjectures about these phrases possibly representing track titles for a forthcoming album. Additionally, hints in the posts—such as Russian lettering interpreted as “TPK”—have fueled theories about connections to The Paper Kingdom.
However, current circumstances may temper enthusiasm for immediate announcements, particularly following the tragic passing of former drummer Bob Bryar in November 2024. Though he had not been active since 2010, Bryar’s close ties with the band suggest that proposed projects, including any new music, may be placed on hold as they process this loss.
Potential Sound of a New MCR Album
“Foundations of Decay”: A Glimpse into the Future?
As fans eagerly await further developments regarding a potential new album, “The Foundations of Decay”stands as the most recent collective expression of MCR’s artistry. Given its contemporaneous release—less than three years ago—it could provide a valuable insight into the artistic direction of any future projects. Should the eventual album indeed be titled The Paper Kingdom, will it continue the themes the band initially began exploring?
It is worth noting that the original conception of the album delved into darker themes, which had a considerable emotional toll on the members, particularly on Gerard Way. Revisiting these themes might prove challenging; however, if MCR has the courage to decline opportunities that do not resonate with them, they may naturally evolve in their storytelling. A modern interpretation of The Paper Kingdom could reflect a more optimistic outlook, contrasting with the darkness of their previous work.
