Reflecting On 3 Years: The Disappointment of Missing DC’s Coolest Movie Suit

Reflecting On 3 Years: The Disappointment of Missing DC’s Coolest Movie Suit

The conclusion of the DCEU leaves numerous fans, including myself, reflecting fondly on its myriad elements, especially the remarkable costume designs. While the supersuits within the DCEU stirred some debate, it’s undeniable that many admirers are mourning the departure of the darker, more lifelike outfits that adorned both heroes and villains alike. Upon reflection, it’s evident that the DCEU made significant strides in costume design, even when it opted for daring choices, like Superman’s look.

I’m particularly enthusiastic about the vibrant costumes shown in the recent Superman trailer, highlighting David Corenswet’s traditional comic book attire. However, as I revisit one of the DCEU’s most critically acclaimed films, it’s clear that James Gunn should not hesitate to integrate the best elements from the now-concluded franchise in his future projects. Crucially, the superior costume I envision was crafted with his input—yet it never received the recognition it truly deserves.

James Gunn’s debut in the realm of DC films came with The Suicide Squad, a creative reboot of an earlier, criticized attempt. While the film may not have achieved significant box office success, it garnered praise for numerous factors, including its stellar cast, balanced tone, and vibrant visual aesthetics. Among its many appealing aspects, the costumes, particularly Bloodsport’s striking design, deserve greater attention.

As one of the leading figures in The Suicide Squad, Bloodsport, portrayed by the talented Idris Elba, was positioned among key characters like Harley Quinn. However, the need to showcase Elba’s famed presence likely contributed to the decision against using his character’s helmet extensively. It is understandable that filmmakers aimed to leverage Elba’s marketability, as concealing his face would not capitalize on his star appeal, regardless of the costume’s excellence.

Moreover, Idris Elba’s full range of acting skills would have been diminished had he been confined behind a mask throughout much of the film. While the absence of the helmet may have benefited storytelling, it’s clear that I still long to see more of Bloodsport’s exceptional wardrobe in future installments.

The latest series Creature Commandos is now available for streaming on Max, featuring characters such as Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) and Weasel (Sean Gunn), both of whom appeared in The Suicide Squad. This connection paves the way for other beloved characters from Gunn’s DCEU film to return, and given that Bloodsport survived, I remain optimistic about his reintegration into the DC Universe. With any luck, we will finally witness more of his striking costume in future projects.
