Many players have turned to mods to enhance their experience, altering character appearances with skins from both the Marvel Comics and cinematic universe, as well as incorporating models from popular games like Fortnite.
A user on Nexus Mods introduced a Donald Trump mod for Captain America, one of the game’s prominent Vanguards. The mod quickly gained traction on social media, with users expressing interest in a corresponding Joe Biden mod for multiplayer matches. Unfortunately, Nexus Mods has since removed the Trump mod, leading players to encounter an error message indicating the mod is no longer available. The Biden mod also appears to be unlisted.

Nexus Mods had previously announced in 2020 that it would remove mods concerning sociopolitical themes in the U.S., encouraging users to report any such content. This decision was made amidst the highly contentious presidential election between Donald Trump and Joe Biden, which Biden ultimately won.
Responses on social media reflected a mixed reception to the mod’s removal; many fans of Marvel Rivals expressed no surprise, citing the inappropriateness of Trump’s portrayal in a Captain America costume. Conversely, a minority criticized Nexus Mods for prohibiting all politically themed content. It’s noteworthy that Trump-themed mods have existed in other gaming communities, with various mods still available for games like Skyrim, Fallout 4, and XCOM 2 despite their presence being limited on Nexus Mods.
As for the developers, NetEase Games has not yet addressed the broader implications of character mods, particularly those involving politically charged figures. Given that Marvel Rivals is a relatively new title, developers are currently more focused on resolving gameplay bugs and addressing inaccurate player bans.
