Demi Lovato and Raven-Symoné recently discussed their collaboration on the Disney series **Sonny With A Chance** during Lovato’s new documentary titled **Child Star**. This documentary, which premiered on Hulu on September 17, dives deep into the lives of child actors who grew up in the spotlight, examining the various challenges they encountered along the way.
In one segment of the documentary, Demi Lovato and Raven-Symoné recounted their experiences on the Disney original series back in 2010. Lovato revealed that she reached out to Symoné for the documentary because she admired her work on **That’s So Raven**.
Raven-Symoné reminded Lovato that they had previously worked together on **Sonny With A Chance**, which Lovato admitted she didn’t recall because of her struggles with dissociation. Symoné guest-starred as Amber Algoode in episode 15 of season 2 of **Sonny With A Chance**.
Throughout the documentary, Demi Lovato took accountability for her challenging behavior, attributing it to her own pain and hurt. Raven-Symoné responded, acknowledging that while Lovato may not have been the most pleasant person to be around, she could empathize because she was also a child actor.
“I mean, you weren’t the nicest person. You weren’t like, ‘Welcome!’ You weren’t doing that. Being the type of person I am and that I’ve been in the industry for as long as you, I understand the glaze over the eyes. I didn’t hold it against you. I just thought, ‘Something’s going on there,’”Symoné remarked.
Symoné’s response was well-received on social media, with many praising her for articulating her viewpoint respectfully.
Supporters lauded the **That’s So Raven** actress for exemplifying true friendship and understanding the context of Lovato’s struggles.
“Wow, that’s some real talk! It’s impressive that Raven-Symoné chose to approach the situation with understanding rather than judgment. Sometimes, the best way to handle difficult personalities is with empathy,”one user tweeted.
“Raven is such a real friend for sticking around Demi and not judging her because she knew Demi was going through a lot at such a young age. I can’t say the same for others who abandoned her for more famous friends, even though Demi was there during their lowest moments,”another remarked.
Conversely, some disagreed with the criticism directed at Symoné, commending Demi Lovato for taking responsibility for her past behavior.
“Why are some calling Raven ‘bitter’? She recalled meeting Demi on the set of **SWAC** and sensed something was off, yet she never held it against her because she understood the pressures of being a child star. That’s a real friend,”one user shared.
“In the doc, right before that Raven quote, Demi acknowledges, ‘I remember how difficult I was to work with.’ Kudos to her for taking responsibility and recognizing that despite her pain, she hurt others, which isn’t acceptable,”another commented.
“Demi was battling drugs and facing assault during that time. Raven’s statements are valid and beneficial. To those on Stan Twitter, maybe consider shutting down the negativity,”someone else remarked.
“Raven is just being real. She told Demi directly. There’s no issue with that. Demi has acknowledged her difficulties with bulimia and drugs, which made her hard to be around,”another netizen tweeted.
Demi Lovato and Alyson Stoner Reflect on **Camp Rock**
In another segment of **Child Star**, Demi Lovato and her **Camp Rock** co-star Alyson Stoner (who uses they/them pronouns) reflected on their experiences while filming the iconic movie. Lovato also apologized to Stoner for her behavior during **Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam**, which was released two years after the original in 2008.
Demi Lovato recognized the significant career changes she underwent between the two films after starring in her Disney original show **Sonny With A Chance** in 2009. She felt that the rapid success led to a “power dynamic”that caused her to prioritize personal connections over career growth.
“My career exploded, and suddenly I was staying at the Four Seasons. There was definitely a power dynamic shift, and when the second movie came around, it felt validating because I had been leveled up, but I was sacrificing connection for success,”Lovato explained.
Alyson Stoner also expressed feeling a loss of trust and connection during the filming of the second **Camp Rock** film. They noted that the work environment was quite challenging, as they had to tread carefully around Lovato to prevent any blow-ups.
Demi Lovato quickly offered an apology, acknowledging that her difficult circumstances did not excuse her treatment of her co-stars.
“I know we were both dealing with our own struggles, but that still didn’t give me the right to treat anyone poorly. I sincerely apologize for any stress or discomfort anyone felt. I truly regret any hurt I caused, and looking back, I’m profoundly sad thinking about how many people I may have treated poorly,”Lovato stated.
**Child Star** marked Demi Lovato’s directorial debut, featuring fellow child actors such as Drew Barrymore, Christina Ricci, Alyson Stoner, and JoJo Siwa, who shared their personal stories about their experiences as child stars.
