Returning Cast in Squid Game Season 2
The much-anticipated second season of Squid Game, which premiered on December 26, 2024, on Netflix, brings back several key characters from the acclaimed first season. Following its debut in September 2021, the series quickly became Netflix’s most-viewed offering. Among the returning cast is Lee Jung-jae, reprising his role as Seong Gi-hun, the winner of the deadly games who is now hell-bent on dismantling the organization behind the competition. Other returning actors include Wi Ha-joon as the determined Hwang Jun-Ho and Lee Byung-hun, who returns as the enigmatic Front Man, Hwang In-ho.
The series’ creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, continues his role as the writer and director for this season and has confirmed that season 3 will be the final chapter in this gripping saga, slated for release in 2025. Squid Game season 2 will consist of seven episodes, a slight reduction from the nine episodes offered in the first season. The conclusion of the first season illustrated that Gi-hun left the game with a staggering 45.6 billion won, yet he opts to return, aiming to dismantle the game from within.
Character Highlights from Season 2
1. Kang Cheol
Played by Park Si-wan
Kang Cheol, the younger brother of Sae-byeok, makes a poignant appearance in season 2, episode 2. Gi-hun observes him from a distance as he arrives home, revealing that San-woo’s mother has taken, him under her wing after the events of the first season. Notably, Cheol affectionately refers to San-woo’s mother as “grandma,”indicating they have established a caring bond that fills the void left by Sae-byeok.
2. Sang-woo’s Mother
Played by Park Hye-jin
Sang-woo’s mother also returns sparingly in season 2. After losing her son, she takes in Cheol at Gi-hun’s request, avoiding his potential orphan status. While her role in the story is limited, her phone conversation with Gi-hun in season 1 marks a pivotal moment, solidifying her importance. Gi-hun checks up on both her and Cheol, witnessing a mutual affection that has developed between them.
3. Kim Sang-hyuk
Played by Lee Dong-yong
Chief Kim, originally introduced as a police officer, returns early in season 2, advocating for Jun-ho to resume his detective work. Although Chief Kim does not participate in the games, his character adds depth to the storyline and reinforces the police’s position in the unfolding drama.
4. North Korean Defector Shelter Employee
Played by Choi Jae-sup
This character appears in both seasons as a marriage broker helping North Korean defectors. Gi-hun seeks him out in season 2 to check on Sae-byeok’s mother, demonstrating his commitment to caring for her family in the aftermath of the tragic events of season 1.
5. Jung-bae (Player 390)
Played by Lee Seo-hwan
Jung-bae, previously an unnamed character, becomes a significant contestant in season 2 and remains fiercely loyal to Gi-hun, revealing new layers to his past. His military background helps elevate him beyond the stereotype of a mere gambler, showcasing a more complex character.
6. The Salesman
Played by Gong Yoo
The Salesman returns, initiating encounters that draw desperate individuals into the Squid Game. His recruitment methods are further explored this season, adding depth to his role and providing a glimpse into how the game’s dark machinations operate.
7. Hwang Jun-ho
Played by Wi Ha-joon
Jun-ho returns in season 2, having survived the shocking events of the previous season. Now a traffic officer, he reunites with Gi-hun to ally against their common foes. This character’s development is critical as he navigates his past while forging ahead with new alliances.
8. The Front Man / Hwang In-ho
Played by Lee Byung-hun
In-ho, Gi-hun’s nemesis, deepens the intrigue surrounding their relationship as he masquerades as a contestant. His motivations remain enigmatic, and watching how this dynamic unfolds will be crucial as the series approaches its conclusion in season 3.
9. Seong Gi-hun
Played by Lee Jung-jae
Gi-hun’s moral compass drives him to believe in the goodness of people involved in the games. However, season 2 tests this belief, forcing him to grapple with the reality that many participants may not share his ideals. His journey promises to be central to the unfolding story.
