The enigmatic Black Heart must join Agatha’s coven to traverse the Witches’ Road. While we had a solid theory about the identity of the Black Heart, the sixth episode of Agatha All Along has complicated our understanding.
During the second episode of Agatha All Along, viewers witnessed Agatha teaming up with Teen, who has now been identified as Billy Maximoff, as they sought out witches for their journey on the Witches’ Road. Their initial destination was Lilia Calderu, a divination witch capable of compiling a list of potential candidates. Among the names were Alice Wu-Gulliver, Jennifer Kale, Lilia herself, and a final entry with no name but a drawing of a black heart.
Warning: Spoilers for Agatha All Along episode 6.
Initially, it was assumed by Agatha and the audience alike that the black heart symbol pointed to Rio, a Green Witch with whom Agatha shares a complex relationship. Considering Rio’s frequent mentions of having a black heart and the suggested romantic tension with Agatha, she seemed a likely candidate—until recent developments unfolded.
Could Billy Be the Black Heart?
In the sixth episode, titled “Familiar by Thy Side,” we were shown the last three years of Billy’s life, highlighting his relationship with his boyfriend, Eddie. Their sweet dynamic reveals Eddie’s unwavering support for Billy, especially when he sends a text declaring, “You are my [black heart emoji].” This development raises questions about whether we misidentified Rio as the Black Heart, considering Billy is now on the Witches’ Road.
Additionally, there’s a significant clue regarding the sigil that Lilia placed on Billy in his past identity as William Kaplan. Because of this, she was unable to list his name; instead, she chose a representation of him—a black heart. Meanwhile, it seems nothing prevented her from writing Rio’s name, which strengthens the theory that Billy is the Black Heart, the one name she couldn’t include.
What Exactly is the Black Heart?
In the lore of Marvel Comics, Black Heart is depicted as the offspring of Mephisto, a character that Marvel fans have been eagerly waiting to see. Prior to the revelation of “Agatha all along,” many believed Mephisto to be the mastermind behind the odd occurrences in Wanda’s Westview setting in WandaVision. This connection makes sense, especially as Billy and Tommy’s forms are claimed to be crafted through Wanda’s magic, while their souls are attributed to Mephisto.
Is it possible Marvel is merging these characters? Could Mephisto surface and assert that Billy is his progeny, Blackheart? Or might Rio, yet to make an appearance in episode 6, be a gender-swapped version of Blackheart? Numerous questions linger about both characters. Let’s hope clarifications come as the series reaches its conclusion.
