Robert Downey Jr. Shares Thoughts on Elon Musk: Insights from Iron Man Actor

Essential Insights

  • Robert Downey Jr. expresses skepticism towards Musk’s actions while recognizing his successes.
  • Musk’s contentious behavior includes endorsing conspiracy theories and political support for Trump.
  • Downey Jr.’s remarks are unlikely to influence existing opinions about Musk.

Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr. shared his reservations regarding Elon Musk while still giving credit to the entrepreneur’s achievements.

The character of Tony Stark/Iron Man has frequently drawn parallels with Elon Musk. Both figures are affluent and have greatly impacted technology—Stark through the fictional Stark Industries and Musk via real-world endeavors like SpaceX and Tesla. Musk even made a cameo as himself in a scene from Iron Man 2, a memorable moment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and co-writer Mark Fergus noted that the character of Stark was influenced by Musk as well as other influential figures like Donald Trump and Steve Jobs. However, Musk’s polarizing nature stems from his promotion of far-right ideologies and anti-Semitic conspiracy theories, coupled with the increase of hate speech and misinformation on X (formerly Twitter) during his management, not to mention his financial backing of Trump in the upcoming 2024 U.S. Presidential Election.

During his appearance on the podcast On with Kara Swisher, Downey Jr. was prompted to share his perspective on Musk’s “cosplaying”as Tony Stark, highlighting the comparisons between the two. Downey Jr. took the opportunity to critique Musk’s behavior, referencing his notorious stunts and public spats such as challenging Mark Zuckerberg to a duel. He stated, “I only met him a couple of times. As a nearly 60-year-old recovering white American male, I just wish he’d manage his public persona better, but that’s not my responsibility.”

While some critics of Musk are willing to overlook his erratic actions due to his technological innovations, Downey Jr. appears to be among those who believe that Musk’s successes do not excuse his behavior. “The notion of ‘it’s acceptable because we need to reach Mars’ doesn’t resonate with me,”he remarked. “Nonetheless, it’s important to consider everything he has done that proves his worth.”

It’s unlikely that Downey Jr.’s statements will shift public perceptions of Musk. By aligning himself with Trump, Musk has become a figure evoking both admiration and disdain. Despite Downey Jr.’s popularity, his words are unlikely to sway opinions in a political climate where views are often deeply entrenched. This observation should not imply a moral equivalence between differing sides of the political spectrum.

As for Downey Jr.’s tenure as Tony Stark, it seems to have concluded, at least for now. However, he is set to reappear in the MCU as Doctor Doom in the upcoming film Avengers: Doomsday, and is rumored to feature in Fantastic Four: First Steps as well. Some fans regard this casting choice as a last-ditch effort for both Marvel Studios and Downey Jr. to regain their former glory, which has waned since he stepped down from his Iron Man role post-Avengers: Endgame. Yet, many others are eagerly anticipating Downey Jr.’s portrayal of this iconic villain.

The Iron Man series from Marvel Studios is currently available for streaming on Disney Plus.
