WARNING: This article contains potential spoilers for Batman/Santa Claus: Silent Knight Returns #1!
DC Comics recently made a bold and contentious move by aging Jon Kent into a young adult within mainstream continuity, disrupting the unique camaraderie shared between Superboy and Robin. Initially, I was grappling with the change, feeling a tangible void in the Super Sons dynamic. Yet, a new comic has sparked my interest in a different superhero duo that might just fill that gap.
This shift has opened the door for a potential new hero trinity: Robin, Superboy, and the new character, Thunderheart.
One of my longstanding grievances with DC revolves around their choice to age Jon Kent. This decision seemingly dismantled the special friendship he shared with Damian Wayne; their relationship was more profound than mere adventures; it allowed both characters to truly grow and thrive together.
While both Jon and Damian have established various relationships over the years, I have often found those connections lacking. However, thanks to the creative team of Jeff Parker and Lukas Ketner in Batman/Santa Claus: Silent Knight Returns #1, I’ve uncovered a fresh pairing to champion: Robin and Wally West’s daughter, Irey “Thunderheart” West.
Robin’s Partnership with Thunderheart: A Perfect New Friendship
The Allure of Justice League Kid Friendships
As a lifelong admirer of the Justice League, particularly the core members known as the Big Seven—Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Martian Manhunter, The Flash, and Green Lantern—I find their stories foundational to my love for the DC Universe. My fascination extends to their offspring, leading me to be particularly captivated by the friendship between Jon Kent and Damian Wayne.
Since Jon’s transformation into a young adult, both he and Damian have formed various connections with other characters. However, none of these relationships have captivated me as much, especially regarding Damian—you’d expect him to bond with the children of the Big Seven. This longing for a next-generation friendship heightened my enthusiasm for the dynamic between Thunderheart and Robin in Santa Claus: Silent Knight Returns. Their brief but impactful interaction has already captured my interest, and I am eager for their friendship to develop.
Santa Claus: Silent Knight Returns Offers an Unforgettable Robin & Thunderheart Moment
The Bright Future of Damian Wayne and Irey West’s Friendship
Within the pages of Santa Claus: Silent Knight Returns #1, Batman, Superman, Green Lantern John Stewart, Queen Nubia, Mera, Thunderheart, and Robin face off against the formidable Silent Knight. As the situation becomes dire, Batman swiftly instructs Thunderheart to evacuate both herself and Robin from the containment zone created by their adversary. This situation leads to a lighthearted exchange, with Robin expressing reluctance to leave the fight, only for Thunderheart to counter with, “My dad told me to listen to your dad,” showcasing her quick wit.
However, before they can escape, a minion of the Silent Knight captures Thunderheart. In a moment of selflessness, Irey prioritizes Robin’s safety over her own, pushing him past the barrier just in time. Although Damian hesitates, her courageous act solidifies the burgeoning bond between them. Their natural chemistry and shared banter in this moment have endeared me to their partnership, and I eagerly anticipate DC expanding on their adventures.

Looking Ahead: Jon Kent’s De-Aging in Shazam! #20 (2025)
Amidst my excitement for the Robin and Thunderheart pairing, there lies a beacon of hope for the revival of the Super Sons dynamic. A recent synopsis for Shazam! #20 hints that Jon could be reverted to childhood, presenting a chance to rekindle the iconic relationship with Damian. Should this change prove lasting, we might not only witness the re-emergence of one of DC’s classic duos but also the formation of a new heroic trio: Robin, Superboy, and Thunderheart.
