Warning: Contains spoilers for Uncanny X-Men #7!
Throughout her journey with the X-Men, Rogue has experienced a spectrum of challenges and triumphs. Initially, the X-Men were founded on the ideals of Charles Xavier, who provided her with a sense of belonging and purpose. However, it is Cyclops who has truly earned her profound respect over the years. Despite their differing visions for the X-Men’s future, Rogue’s regard for Scott remains unwavering.
In a recent confrontation, Cyclops orders Rogue to back down as he attempts to prevent an imminent conflict. Tensions escalate, leading him to question whether her frustrations are aimed at him.
In the wake of the downfall of Krakoa and Charles Xavier’s waning influence, Rogue struggles to uphold the ideals the X-Men represent to her. Despite her current contention with Cyclops, she acknowledges, “there’s no one I respect more, not even Charles.”
Cyclops Has Gained Rogue’s Deeper Respect Compared to Professor X
Uncanny X-Men #7 by Gail Simone, David Marquez, Edgar Salazar, Matthew Wilson, and Clayton Cowles
While the X-Men owe their existence to Charles Xavier, the latter days of Krakoa revealed his shortcomings as a leader. His abandonment of his foundational dream left many mutants, including Rogue and Cyclops, feeling adrift and disillusioned. Both of them devoted their lives to the cause championed by Xavier. Rogue deeply understands Cyclops’s sacrifices and relentless dedication to the protection of mutantkind. He stands as a steadfast warrior, ever determined to push through adversity.
In times of crisis, the mutants turn to Scott Summers for guidance. Rogue shares this belief wholeheartedly. Over the years, Cyclops’s commitment to his role has often placed him at odds with other mutants, as not everyone agrees with his leadership style. Nevertheless, he persists through those discordant views. When conflict arose during the raid on Greymalkin Prison—at a time when Rogue was involved with Captain America’s Unity Force—Cyclops faced torture and near execution at the hands of Orchis. These experiences reinforce the depth of their bond and mutual respect.
Rogue’s Respect for Cyclops May Not Prevent Future Conflicts Over Mutantkind’s Direction
A Growing Divide
Despite her high regard for Cyclops, Rogue is not one to simply follow orders. Her leadership is driven by compassion, as she strives to create a secure environment for her team. In contrast, Cyclops’s approach is often rooted in strategy and pragmatism. Their upcoming clash over matters like the raid on Greymalkin Prison marks just the beginning of potential conflicts, especially concerning the safety of those she protects. Rogue’s deep respect for Cyclops will not induce her to surrender control when the safety of her team is at stake.
