In June, Benedict Cumberbatch announced his return to the role of Doctor Strange in the forthcoming Avengers: Doomsday. This news didn’t come as a surprise, as he reprised his role in both Infinity War and Endgame, making it a seamless continuation of the Avengers’ ongoing battle.
The real surprise arrived last week with a rumor indicating that Sam Raimi might step back into the director’s chair for the third film in the Doctor Strange series. Once this speculation surfaced on Reddit, reactions were swift and mostly positive, with many fans suggesting that Raimi should have full creative freedom—something they believe would allow him to fully explore the character in ways that Multiverse of Madness could not. One user highlighted that “the character has immense potential for a great movie,” which definitely resonates.
As an avid fan of Doctor Strange since the initial movie, I appreciated the risks taken by Multiverse of Madness and its departure from usual Marvel constraints. However, I concur that the film could have benefited from less fan service and a more cohesive script. Raimi has an outstanding track record, having directed the original Spider-Man trilogy and a multitude of exceptional horror films. He deserves the chance to execute his vision!
Raimi’s filmmaking style is a perfect match for Doctor Strange. While I admire the first film greatly, I think the world and the character were further enriched in Multiverse of Madness. Scott Derrickson set the stage well, but Raimi truly expanded it. That said, it’s natural for fans to feel cautious about Raimi’s possible return.
Raimi Deserves Full Creative Control
One major critique of Multiverse of Madness was its script. When a legendary director like Raimi is involved, it’s critical that he has complete creative autonomy. Should he return for the third film, it’s essential that he be allowed to realize his vision unhindered. The quirky moments in the previous installment were some of the film’s highlights, and it was disappointing to see many of these moments restrained by a strictly enforced Marvel-friendly PG-13 rating.
Given that there seems to be no plans for Spider-Man 4 (and perhaps that’s for the best), Marvel should grant Raimi the opportunity to unleash his full creative flair on Doctor Strange. The standout moments were captivating, and it would be thrilling to see what he could achieve without script interference. Let Raimi embrace the strangeness, if you will forgive the pun.
