Sara Paxton Discusses Season 2 Revelations, Cliffhanger Fate, and Weaponry in Based On A True Story

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Season 2 of Based on a True Story!

Sara Paxton embraces a thrilling new role in the second season of Based on a True Story. Known for her early breakout performance in the teen fantasy film Aquamarine, Paxton has cultivated a diverse career since her teenage years, finding success in films such as Return to Halloweentown, Sydney White, and the notorious remake of The Last House on the Left. More recently, she has appeared in notable projects like Bad Education and Ana de Armas’ acclaimed biopic Blonde, as well as Twin Peaks: The Return.

In the latest season, Paxton portrays Paige, the sister of Natalia Dyer’s Chloe, a character who becomes one of the victims of Tom Bateman’s Westside Ripper in Season 1. As the narrative unfolds, it is revealed that Paige has taken on the role of a copycat killer, driven by her desire for revenge against Matt. The season delves into her pursuit of vengeance and confrontation, culminating in intense moments as she engages with Ava, played by Kaley Cuoco, and Nathan, portrayed by Chris Messina.

The expanded cast of Season 2 includes both familiar faces and new additions, such as Liana Liberato and Melissa Fumero, who plays Drew—a mother who befriends Ava and ultimately is revealed to be Matt’s ex-wife. This season has achieved an impressive 82% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, surpassing the acclaim of its predecessor and setting the stage for potential future story arcs.

A True Fan of the Series Before Joining

The Role Was a Pleasant Surprise

ScreenRant: “I’m thrilled to be speaking with you, Sara. I’ve long admired your work and I’m also a huge fan of Based on a True Story. What about the show and your character motivated you to join this intriguing narrative?”

Sara Paxton: “I absolutely love the show! I binge-watched Season 1 and was eager to join Season 2. As a true-crime enthusiast, I appreciate the mix of mystery, thriller, and dark humor that defines this series. The fact that the show blends these genres makes it a perfect fit for my interests. Interestingly, when I auditioned, I received only a page of basic dialogue with no insight into my character’s arc. I simply knew I wanted to be a part of it, and the role turned out to be far more substantial than I anticipated.”

Regarding the shocking reveal of your character: “Filming that moment was exhilarating, especially after portraying such intense scenes prior. How did you feel during that pivotal reveal?”

Sara Paxton: “That moment was a blast! The excitement on set was palpable. I had just watched my stunt double perform incredible stunts, and it energized me for my character’s dramatic entrance. I’ve played various roles in the past—mostly victims or mean girls—but this villainous portrayal offered a unique challenge that I relished.”

Your character’s duality is fascinating. Considering you portrayed Paige with a more subdued demeanor earlier on, how did you navigate that balance in performance?

Sara Paxton: “The creative team handled my character’s development brilliantly. Initially, I was unaware of Paige’s evolution. After shooting initial scenes, the directors revealed I was the season’s serial killer, which thrilled me. I managed to portray the character’s emotional turmoil over her sister’s murder without revealing her killer instincts. This balance was key to making the reveal successful.”

In the gripping finale of Season 2, Paige finds herself in a tense confrontation with Matt as he attempts to save Ava and Nathan. With her fate uncertain, can you share what might be going through Paige’s mind during this climactic moment?

Sara Paxton: “This confrontation is exactly what Paige has been anticipating since her sister’s death. Throughout the season, she slowly pieces together Matt’s true identity, and that moment of recognition fills her with a sense of triumph. Unfortunately, I cannot reveal too much about her future. I’m just as eager as the audience to see where her story goes!”
