Highlights from Sasha Calle’s Supergirl Journey
- Warner Bros. has cast Milly Alcock as the new Supergirl, replacing Sasha Calle in the upcoming DCU project.
- Support for Calle has emerged from fellow actress Leslie Grace.
- Despite the transition, Calle takes pride in her portrayal of Supergirl and looks forward to future opportunities.
Sasha Calle, known for her role as Supergirl, recently shared her emotional journey after being replaced in James Gunn’s forthcoming reboot of the DC Universe. Calle’s experience in promoting her character during the tumultuous release of The Flash was fraught with challenges, leaving a lasting impression on her career.
Initially, Calle’s portrayal of Kara Zor-El in The Flash earned her accolades amidst the mediocre reception of the film itself. However, due to the controversy surrounding lead actor Ezra Miller, much of the promotional burden fell on Calle. The film’s release was further complicated by Warner Bros.’ early announcement of a reboot, which influenced audience perceptions and expectations. This uncertainty culminated in Calle being replaced by Milly Alcock for the new DCU installment.
In an insightful interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Calle described her transition as “bittersweet.”Her camaraderie with Leslie Grace, whose own project was scrapped, provided solace during this time. Calle expressed feeling “heartbroken” over DC Studios’ decision to forge a different path, particularly as her character was initially poised for a multi-film presence within the franchise.
Reflecting on her performance, Calle stated:
“I look back at it as something super beautiful. It’s been said that a queer Latina girl like me couldn’t be Supergirl. But I was, and no one can take that away from me. That is the most important thing for me; I did something that mattered.”
Calle recounted a memorable encounter with a security guard who recognized her as Supergirl. His enthusiastic words, “You’re a badass. We love you,” highlighted the impact her portrayal had on audiences:
“For that man to have connected with my performance, it was such a beautiful moment, and those little moments are everything to me.”
Despite her replacement, Calle remains hopeful and eager to collaborate with those who appreciate her craft. Fans too have expressed their disappointment regarding the shift, hoping that Calle’s version of Supergirl would find a place in the new universe. Nonetheless, Gunn has chosen a new direction for the DCU, assigning Alcock the role of Supergirl in the upcoming Woman of Tomorrow film.
Calle has graciously wished Alcock well in her new role, though many fans believe she deserved a continued chance in the franchise. Looking ahead, Calle’s talent suggests that she may join a new franchise or even explore opportunities within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, following in the footsteps of other superhero actors entering that realm.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is set to premiere in theaters on June 26, 2026.
