In the second season of Bookie, Danny and Ray encounter challenges that go beyond their troublesome clients. Initially introduced in the show’s debut season by talented stand-up comedian Sebastian Maniscalco and esteemed character actor Omar Dorsey, this dynamic duo captivated audiences from the start. When Season 1 concluded, Danny was grappling with his wife’s departure to stay with her mother and the escalating dangers of his bookkeeping business, while Ray had relocated himself, his grandmother, and her soon-to-be husband to a luxurious mansion.
The new season resumes immediately from the cliffhanger of the first, with Danny making a frantic trip to Northern California, hoping to win Sandra back amidst conflict with his mother-in-law. Meanwhile, Ray remains behind to care for his grandmother and watch over Frank after his heart scare in Season 1. However, Ray’s life spirals into chaos with the unexpected return of an old flame, all while they face the looming threat of offshore gambling encroaching on their business. Together, Danny and Ray have plenty on their plates as they navigate these complications in the upcoming episodes.
The cast of Bookie Season 2 features a mix of familiar faces and new additions, including Vanessa Ferlito, Jorge Garcia, Andrea Anders, Maxim Swinton, and Rob Corddry. Notably, the season will also have cameos from Charlie Sheen, returning in his fictionalized role from Season 1, along with Ray Romano as Artie, Scrubs’ Zach Braff, and Brad Garrett from Everybody Loves Raymond, ensuring the show retains its high comedic standards.
Excitement for the season’s release was palpable during a recent interview with Sebastian Maniscalco and Omar Dorsey, where they discussed the developments for Danny’s quest to mend his fractured relationship with Sandra, as well as the implications of Ray’s returning past love on his relationship with Ferlito’s Lorraine. Additionally, speculation arose regarding Maniscalco’s potential reappearance in The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2.
Danny & Sandra’s Relationship Will Be Central to Season 2
“…my personal life is kind of turned upside down.”
Sebastian Maniscalco noted, “We definitely follow Danny through his relationship with Sandra. Sandra comes with some baggage this season due to her mother’s involvement. I now have to manage issues with both my mother-in-law and my wife, along with a stepchild. This season throws unexpected challenges my way, including having a police officer move next door and the dealing with death. Plus, we’ll be traveling to Costa Rica to tackle issues with offshore online gambling. It’s going to be quite the ride!”
Ray’s Returning Baby Mama Sparks “All Kinds of Friction”
It Won’t End Well for Him & Lorraine
Omar, let’s shift the focus to you. Despite it being a bit of a running joke last season, Ray’s new baby mama appears just as he’s beginning to regain stability. What insights can you provide about this storyline?
Omar Dorsey: Oh, she arrives and brings all kinds of chaos. [Laughs] It’s amusing because he’s confused about how she even found out where he lives. Now she’s admiring the house, commenting on how it’s big enough for everyone. The tricky part is that she’s quite beautiful, which complicates matters. Who knows, there might even be another baby mama on the horizon! [Laughs]
How might this affect your relationship with Lorraine?
Omar Dorsey: Have you seen the season’s artwork?
I have.
Omar Dorsey: Let’s just say it humorously depicts two women taking it out on Ray!
Why Bookie’s Debt-Collection Scenes Resonate So Well
“…it’s not a lot of improv.”
The debt collection scenes are impressively crafted. How much of the dialogue stems from improvisation versus the script?
Omar Dorsey: Their writing is so strong that we tend not to improv much. I might slip in a line or two, but most of what you see comes straight from the script. Chuck Lorre’s writing is top-notch, so there’s little need to stray from it.
Sebastian Maniscalco: The authenticity of our performances stems from how thoroughly we rehearse. For me, acting parallels my experience in stand-up; it becomes ingrained and allows for a natural expression. I find myself pacing around my home, running lines until they stick, primarily because my memory isn’t what it once was. All our preparation contributes to the performances feeling genuine and unforced.
Maniscalco Lacks “A Lot of Confidence”About His Return for Super Mario Bros. Movie 2
“This is the story of my career…”
In closing, Sebastian, I must ask about your character Spike in Super Mario. I was hoping to see more of him. Is there a chance you’ll return for the sequel?
Sebastian Maniscalco: This encapsulates my career trajectory. Recently, I visited Universal Studios, where they showcase all the Super Mario merchandise. I was excited to show my kids a plush of my character. There was nothing; just all the other characters. My absence from the merchandise offers little optimism about my future in the sequel. I haven’t heard anything yet, so it’s all up in the air. [Chuckles]
