- Despite these challenges, the success of Season 1 may pave the way for new adaptations in Season 2.
Secret Level, an anthology series by Prime Video, has captured audiences by transforming iconic video games into animated stories, from Mega Man to Warhammer 40K. This creative endeavor has ignited hopes among fans for additional franchises to receive similar adaptations in forthcoming episodes. Recently, creators Tim Miller and Dave Wilson disclosed their aspirations to pursue a crossover episode featuring both Halo and Doom.
The dynamic duo behind the animated series is not shy about experimenting with thematically rich sources. For instance, they reimagined Pac-Man through a horror lens. However, not every innovative idea explored by Miller and Wilson made it to the screen. The highly anticipated convergence of the esteemed franchises, Halo and Doom, did not progress beyond the initial concept.
In a chat with Collider, Miller and Wilson elaborated on their ambition to create a Master Chief/Doom Slayer crossover episode, which met with a swift rejection. Miller conveyed his disappointment regarding fan inquiries about the absence of Halo in the series, clarifying that discussions had taken place with Microsoft but ultimately did not materialize. Wilson revealed that they penned an “impassioned letter”to both companies, only to receive a refusal. While Secret Level stands as one of the leading game adaptations of 2024, many fans may feel let down knowing that a potential crossover between these beloved franchises was not realized.
Potential for New Games in Secret Level Season 2
Halo and Doom are not the only franchises that Miller and Wilson sought to adapt during the first season. Miller expressed their fervent desire to create an episode based on Half-Life, yet they faced similar obstacles. The creators noted that various titles often have prior adaptation arrangements that complicate any attempts to secure rights, while other studios simply reject proposals outright. However, a setback in the first season does not necessarily mean the idea is permanently shelved. Amazon has confirmed a second season for Secret Level, which could potentially explore games that were left out initially.
Looking ahead, Miller remains optimistic that the success of Season 1 will facilitate the adaptation of additional intellectual properties in Season 2. Although it remains uncertain whether the Halo/Doom crossover will ultimately be realized, he acknowledged that “there are still a lot of lawyers,” hinting at ongoing copyright and legal hurdles. Interestingly, Miller revealed that the creators harbor a greater concern for fan reactions than the corporate giants or their legal teams. This apprehension may serve as motivation for the Secret Level team to advocate for their vision and bring fan-favorite games to life in upcoming seasons.
