Selena Gomez Reveals Another Health Condition in Response to Body Shaming Criticism

Selena Gomez Reveals Another Health Condition in Response to Body Shaming Criticism

Selena Gomez has once again found herself in a position where she must reveal a personal health issue in response to the relentless harassment from body shamers.

In 2024, Gomez’s career continues to flourish, highlighted by her performances in the critically acclaimed film Emilia Pérez and her return as Mabel in the latest season of Only Murders in the Building. She also revisited her beloved role as Alex Russo in the new Disney project, Wizards Beyond Waverly Place. Despite her impressive achievements, an alarming number of observers remain fixated on her physical appearance. Over the years, Gomez has endured continuous body shaming and invasive speculation regarding her health and weight. She has openly discussed her struggle with lupus, aiming to combat the negative commentary surrounding her body image. In fact, just last year, she felt compelled to address body shamers who criticized her appearance as a result of her lupus treatment.

While it’s commendable that she is raising awareness about lupus, it is disheartening that she must divulge sensitive health information to counteract the bullying and body shaming she faces. Despite her previous revelations about her lupus diagnosis and her multiple hiatuses from social media to preserve her mental well-being, the torment continues unabated.

Selena Gomez Opens Up About SIBO Flare-Up

At the recent French American Film Festival premiere of Emilia Pérez, Gomez dazzled in an elegant black gown. However, you might recall that social media sparked a fresh wave of body-shaming comments after photographs from the event made their rounds on TikTok. Notably, users focused on the way she posed, often placing her hands on or near her abdomen, suggesting she was attempting to hide her figure. The negativity escalated to a point where it prompted a response from Gomez herself.

In a heartfelt comment, she expressed, “This makes me sick. I have SIBO [Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth] in my small intestine. It flares up. I don’t care that I don’t look like a stick figure. I don’t have that body. End of story. No, I am NOT a victim. I’m just human.” SIBO is characterized by an imbalance of bacteria in the small intestine, leading to symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, and nausea. Given these difficulties, it is truly admirable that Gomez still attended the event to support her colleagues and celebrate their success.

It’s disheartening that this situation is recurring, especially when one considers that Gomez previously explained her lupus diagnosis to combat body shaming. Unfortunately, many body shamers appear unwilling to learn from her disclosures. Their constant harassment has forced her to share yet another intimate detail about her health, which should remain private. More disturbingly, she has had to defend her humanity against these attacks—a defense that nobody should have to make. Ultimately, our weight or body shape can be influenced by myriad factors beyond our control, underscoring the humanity we all share.

Women should never feel pressured to disclose personal health details to quell discussions regarding their appearance. There should be no societal expectation for any individual to justify their body.
