American entrepreneur Dame Dash made headlines during an interview with America Nu Network on September 16, 2024. He revealed that Drake had reached out to him through direct message (DM), expressing interest in purchasing one-third of Jay-Z’s acclaimed album Reasonable Doubt. Dash noted that he was uncertain about the subsequent developments of this proposal.
Regarding the offer, Dame stated:
“You know Drake hollered at me through DM and made an offer, and I’m not quite sure what happened, but I thought that he had got with Jay or something.”
Following Dash’s claims, social media users quickly voiced their opinions on platforms like X (formerly Twitter). Many demanded proof of the interaction, with one user tweeting:
“Post the DM or we don’t believe you. It’s cap. 🧢”
Other reactions from users included:
“He’s not fooling me, this is an advertisement for the album ’cause nobody wanna buy it 😂 tryna bait him with the ‘I’d come show up with a Roc-A-Fella chain on,’ another X user commented.
“Have a hard time believing Drake would DM with something like that,”an internet user mentioned.
“This allegedly happening via DM is comedy 😭”another internet user joked
Moreover, several users expressed skepticism about Dame’s assertions:
“NO ONE IS BUYING AN ASSET WITHOUT A VALUATION!”an X user tweeted.
“Now I understand why Hov doesn’t give this guy too much attention,”another X user remarked.
“You get one of these, this is legit”: Dame Dash offers Roc-A-Fella chain to buyers
Just days before Dame Dash’s stake in Roc-A-Fella was set to be auctioned by the U.S. Marshals on August 29, 2024, he took to Instagram on August 19, 2024, to discuss a deal with fans.
Dame Dash revealed that anyone interested in purchasing one-third of Roc-A-Fella Inc. would need to “bring some bread and anything over 10 million.”To make the deal sweeter, he promised a Roc-A-Fella chain, stating:
“You get an original Roc-A-Fella chain from off my neck. ‘Cause I was the only one that gave out Roc-A-Fella chains when Roc-A-Fella really existed. If I don’t give you the chain, it’s not a legit Roc-A-Fella chain. You get one of these, this is legit. This is the old-school one from off my neck. You know, like when I took one off my neck and gave one to Kanye, Cam’ron, all that.”
However, according to Rolling Stone’s Andre Gee in an investigative article dated April 9, 2024, Dame Dash is not the rightful owner of a stake in Jay-Z’s Reasonable Doubt. Excerpts mentioned on Uproxx noted that Dame lacks the authority to sell his interests or participate in the decision-making process.
The report indicated that Dame’s requirement to relinquish his stake in Roc-A-Fella stemmed from an $823 judgment in a lawsuit involving Josh Webber and Muddy Waters Films.
As a result, Dame was compelled to transfer his shares to the U.S. Marshals, while his attorney Christopher Brown managed to comply with the judgment on his behalf.
In related news, Jay-Z’s legal team announced that he would regain ownership of his album Reasonable Doubt in 2031. Thus, the purchaser of Dame Dash’s Roc-A-Fella shares would hold the rights to the album for seven years before it reverted to Jay-Z, in accordance with copyright laws that dictate ownership returns 35 years after an album’s release.
