Bandai Namco recently unveiled Steel Paws, the latest project from the celebrated game designer Yu Suzuki, best known for his groundbreaking work on Sega’s Shenmue and Virtua Fighter series. Set to launch in 2025, this mobile-exclusive game promises a distinctive style that may surprise even longtime fans of Suzuki’s legendary titles.
Yu Suzuki has been a pivotal figure in the gaming industry since 1984, marked by his initial success with the classic racing game Out Run released in 1986. However, he is most recognized for creating Shenmue, an innovative action-adventure title that first graced the Dreamcast in 1999. Suzuki took on multiple roles as writer, director, and producer across all three mainline titles, culminating in the release of Shenmue 3 in November 2019. Additionally, he was instrumental in shaping the 3D fighting game genre, having directed and produced the original Virtua Fighter in 1993, which broke new ground as the first fighting game featuring full 3D polygonal graphics.
The announcement of Steel Paws was made at The Game Awards 2024, showcased through a captivating 30-second anime-style trailer. The cinematic introduces a striking protagonist with purple hair clad in futuristic red armor, accompanied by three feline-like robots. Viewers witness a surge of mystical energy emanating from a swirling Roman-style colosseum, setting the stage for an exhilarating adventure as the heroes prepare for action. The trailer prominently highlights Suzuki’s involvement, emphasizing his role as the game’s visionary.

Fans can look forward to enjoying Steel Paws exclusively through the Netflix Games streaming service. In this game, players will collaborate with customizable Buddy Robots to navigate a mystical tower revealed once every millennium. Since November 2021, Netflix has expanded its offerings to mobile game access in selected regions, with the service officially rolling out to the U.S. market via the Netflix mobile app in late 2023. While numerous titles are Netflix originals—including games inspired by hit shows like Stranger Things and The Queen’s Gambit—the platform has also incorporated popular mainstream games such as Civilization VI and various Grand Theft Auto entries.
In addition to Steel Paws, Netflix had more exciting announcements during The Game Awards. The streaming giant will debut Squid Game Unleashed, a party game set to launch on December 17. This title will provide temporary access at launch for all players, regardless of their Netflix subscription status, coinciding with the highly anticipated season two premiere of the popular series, arriving on December 26.
