Playboi Carti seems to have transformed significantly since the release of his second studio album – Whole Lotta Red – four years ago. The rapper is adopting a more extroverted approach as he prepares for his upcoming release, sharing a teaser for his new track on Instagram on Thursday morning, September 19.
The video, filmed in a parking lot at night, spans about one and a half minutes. In it, he rambles for a while before declaring:
“Should’ve signed to the O. I ain’t worried bout nobody, n****s can talk, say whatever they wanna say about me.”
The “O”that Carti refers to in the teaser is his record label, Opium Records, which he founded in 2019. Additionally, in the teaser, he announces the title of his upcoming song – Timeless – which is a collaboration with The Weeknd.
Playboi Carti and Lucki Engage in Ongoing Feud
The latest diss from Playboi Carti is part of a heated feud with Lucki that began earlier this month. The conflict ignited over a dispute between Lucki and Destroy Lonely, another artist associated with Carti’s label.
Carti’s freshest diss directed at the Chicago rapper is a response to Lucki’s mention of “crosses up” following the release of ALL RED – the lead single from his forthcoming album, I AM MUSIC, set to be released later this year.
In an effort to clarify his “crosses up”remark, Lucki took to his Instagram story on September 16, explicitly mentioning the Punk Monk rapper as he stated:
“Like I said from the jump, I don’t dislike you. You think yesterday ‘cause I bought a chain and I said, ‘Crosses up’ that I was sneak dissing you ‘cause you made a song that said, ‘Upside down cross tat on my neck,’ but it wasn’t that though, I just bought a chain and was saying ‘Crosses up.’ You just insecure because you don’t love Jesus like that.”
Lucki backed this up with a screenshot of his direct messages, revealing he had received several commendatory messages from the older rapper in 2023. His insinuation that Carti isn’t a genuine Jesus lover might have irked him, inciting the latest Instagram video response.
Moreover, on September 15, Ken Carson – yet another artist under Opium – mocked Lucki in defense of his leader. Carson posted an Instagram story that included lyrics from his track MDMA, where he rapped:
“Lil’ boy, you should’ve signed to Opium, I laugh at that n***a, he slavin’/ You ain’t get no money, you ain’t get no funds/ I count that s**t up and I’m savin.’”
Lucki’s ALL RED has been successful, garnering over 30 million streams on Spotify since its release, and has paved the way for his upcoming album. Currently, there are no details regarding whether a music video for the track will be released.
Playboi Carti Announces Upcoming Album I Am Music
Playboi Carti’s highly anticipated third studio album has been in the works since 2021. Initially titled Narcissist, it was renamed Music in April 2022. The current title – I Am Music – was officially revealed in December 2023.
While a specific release date has yet to be announced, digital versions of the album are available for pre-order on the rapper’s website, with shipments expected “near the release date, no later than six months from September 13, 2024.”
This indicates that I Am Music might be released around March or April 2025.
