  • This fresh live-action take aims to revitalize the storied character’s narrative.

The eagerly awaited live-action version of She-Ra, currently in the works at Amazon’s MGM Studios, is progressing well, paving the way for a new interpretation of the classic tale to be released soon.

The latest reboot of the cherished Masters of the Universe series was the 2018 Netflix animated show, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, which earned acclaim for its dynamic characters and innovative take on the original series. The forthcoming live-action project aspires to further enhance the beloved character’s legacy. Although initial news about the live-action She-Ra surfaced in 2021, updates have been sparse, yet the project appears to be reviving and taking definite shape.

In a promising update, Variety has confirmed that production on Amazon’s live-action She-Ra is officially advancing, with Heidi Schreck attached as the writer and executive producer. Renowned for her Tony-nominated play What the Constitution Means to Me, Schreck has also contributed to well-known series including Billions and Nurse Jackie, alongside Amazon’s I Love Dick, featuring Marvel’s Kathryn Hahn and Kevin Bacon, and AMC’s Dispatches from Elsewhere. Collaborating with Schreck, Robin Sweet, known for her work on Better Call Saul, also serves as an executive producer, while DreamWorks Animation, the studio behind the Netflix reboot, is in on the action. Notable director Nicole Kassell, celebrated for her direction on Watchmen, Castle Rock, The Americans, Westworld, and The Leftovers, is part of the executive production team. With such an impressive assembly of talent, Amazon’s She-Ra live-action revival promises to be a standout for both longstanding fans and new viewers.

She-Ra 1985 transformation

This upcoming series will mark the inaugural live-action adaptation of She-Ra, a character that holds a special place in pop culture history. She-Ra made her first appearance in the 1985 animated film He-Man and She-Ra: The Secret of the Sword, forming part of the Masters of the Universe universe originally centered on He-Man, an enduring figure of the 1980s. Known as Adora, She-Ra was revealed to be the long-lost twin sister of He-Man and a former captain of the Horde, later branching out into her own animated spin-off, She-Ra: Princess of Power. A live-action rendition would signify a significant chapter in She-Ra’s story, blending nostalgia with the opportunity to engage a newer audience.

The 2018 Netflix reboot, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, redefined the iconic character, airing for five seasons with a total of 52 episodes and concluding in 2020. This iteration took a creative leap from the original Masters of the Universe narrative, entirely disconnecting from He-Man’s storyline. This new plot arc follows She-Ra, initially a soldier in the Horde, as she comes to the realization that she has been on the wrong side of the conflict, a twist that cultivated a fervent fanbase. While this animated version garnered widespread appreciation, the forthcoming live-action adaptation is poised to present an original, standalone storyline that diverges from the animated series. Although specifics about the live-action project are still limited, it will refocus on Adora as she grapples with her fate as the defender of Etheria. The official synopsis hints at “an epic fantasy series about an orphaned young woman who leads a revolution to save her planet from destruction.”

As of now, Amazon’s live-action She-Ra series does not have an official release date set. Meanwhile, fans can enjoy the current series, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, along with Masters of the Universe, both available for viewing on Netflix.
