Warning: This article contains spoilers for Silo Season 2, Episode 8.
In the latest episode of Silo, Bernard cleverly manipulates Martha Walker into a precarious alliance that serves his interests. While Juliette’s journey in Season 2 has primarily centered on her determination to return to Silo 18, Bernard’s narrative unfolds as a continual struggle against the Mechanical. His ultimate goal is to prevent the impending rebellion from gaining strength. Despite his relentless attempts to turn the inhabitants of Silo against the Mechanical citizens, the latter consistently manage to outwit the Head of IT.
For example, in Episode 7, the Mechanical orchestrate a plan to construct a rocket aimed at alerting the upper levels about Bernard’s sinister actions. In Episode 8, they devise another strategy to stay a step ahead of him. However, this time it is Bernard who outmaneuvers them by coercively persuading Walker to act as his informant.
Understanding Walker’s Compromise with Mayor Bernard Holland
*Bernard’s Demands from Walker: Information on the Mechanical*
Bernard’s manipulation reaches its peak when he summons Walker to Silo 18’s water-pump area, revealing he has Carla in his grasp. He presents her with an ultimatum: cooperate by divulging the Mechanical’s secrets, and he will ensure Carla’s safety. Recognizing the importance of having an insider, Bernard exploits Walker’s hidden vulnerabilities to coerce her compliance.
Despite her deep resentment towards Bernard and her desire to assist her community in resisting his regime, Walker finds herself ensnared in his web of threats and deceit.
To maintain control, Bernard insists that Walker keep the CCTV running in her workshop, effectively monitoring her for any signs of betrayal. This action forces her into a double life, as she must mislead her community about her supposed involvement in their insurgent plans.
The Motivations Behind Walker’s Betrayal of the Mechanical
*Her Motive: Protecting Carla*
Bernard targets Walker after discovering her intimate relationship with Carla. Earlier in the season, footage revealed the two women sharing a moment in jail, indicating a prior romantic connection that Walker might have concealed. With this knowledge, Bernard realizes that Walker would go to great lengths to ensure Carla’s safety.
Using this vulnerability, he threatens to harm Carla should Walker refuse to cooperate. Ultimately, in a desperate bid to protect Carla, Walker submits to Bernard’s demands, agreeing to act as his informant while feigning ignorance about the Mechanical’s activities in Episode 8.
Did Walker Provide Intelligence on the Mechanical’s Medical Supply Run?
*Walker’s Treachery to Save Carla*
In Episode 8, the Mechanical plan to seize medical supplies from Silo 18, only to be thwarted by Bernard’s forces, who are already waiting for them. The timing of this ambush coincides precisely with Walker’s capitulation to Bernard, suggesting her betrayal ran deep.

As the episode progresses, Walker feigns ignorance when Shirley informs her about the medical raid’s failure, performing her role convincingly. Meanwhile, Bernard observes her through the CCTV, unaffected by her rebellion. After Shirley departs, Walker defiantly gestures towards the camera, fully aware that Bernard’s hold over her remains unshaken.
