Sister Wives star Kody Brown’s emotional farewell to his ex-wife, Meri Brown, has sparked discussions about possible regrets following the end of their marriage. The 55-year-old patriarch of a polygamous family has previously been married to four women and is the father of 18 children. Meri, who is now 53, was Kody’s first wife, marrying him in 1990. Additional marriages followed in subsequent years, culminating in his fourth and current marriage to Robyn Brown, which took place 16 years later.
When the reality series debuted in 2010, the Brown family presented a united front, living cohesively under one roof in Utah. However, by the time season 19 of Sister Wives aired, three of Kody’s four wives had separated from him, and he had strained relationships with many of his children. Meri ultimately became the third wife to leave, concluding their relationship in 2022 after a lengthy 32 years and one child together. Kody, while professing that he never loved Meri, displayed unexpected emotion during their parting.
Kody’s Admission of Lack of Love
A Harsh Reality
Kody has been openly critical of Meri throughout their marriage. He once revealed that he was no longer attracted to her, later escalating to outright claims that he never truly loved her. In a particularly scathing moment during Sister Wives season 19, Kody accused Meri of pushing him towards polygamy, asserting that he recognized a mistake he made immediately after their wedding due to their incompatibility and distinct communication styles.
Despite their mutual upbringing in polygamous households and a shared belief against divorce, the couple attempted to solve their issues by inviting additional wives into their marriage. However, this decision merely offered a temporary solution to their deep-rooted problems. As Kody spent more time with Robyn, he increasingly neglected Meri.
Meri eventually reached a breaking point, feeling unable to endure such disregard any longer.
The Church Dynamics
Ending Their Covenant
Although Kody and Meri had a legal marriage, they divorced in 2014 to allow Kody to legally marry Robyn, aiming to adopt her three children from her previous marriage. Even after this divorce, Kody and Meri remained in a religious covenant with their church and each other.
After their separation, Meri sought guidance from church leaders to officially end their covenant and avoid being eternally sealed to Kody. When Meri informed Kody of her decision to pursue this course of action, he claim he no longer acknowledged the church’s authority and dismissed her concerns, indicating he wanted to sever ties with their relationship completely. Despite Kody’s indifference, Meri’s upbringing in a polygamous family led her to approach the situation thoughtfully. Eventually, the church granted Meri release from her covenant with Kody.
An Emotional Farewell
Reflecting on Their Past
During the emotional farewell in season 19 of Sister Wives, Kody broke down in tears as he bid goodbye to Meri. In a poignant moment captured on YouTube, he expressed, “Meri, it’s the end of an era,”to which she replied, “We had something really good.”While Kody’s tears might suggest regrets about their marriage, the reality remains that if he genuinely wanted Meri to stay, he merely needed to ask. Ultimately, his emotional display may lean more towards relief than genuine remorse.
