The sixth episode of Skeleton Crew deepens the existing relationships among its charming characters while creating a suspenseful lead-up to the series’ final two episodes. Picking up directly from the gripping cliffhanger of episode 5, we see Wim, Neel, KB, and Fern being unexpectedly ejected beneath a luxurious spa resort on the planet Lanupa. Meanwhile, Jod Na Nawood experiences a poignant reunion with his former captain. This installment puts the young protagonists in the spotlight, allowing their bonds as friends and pseudo-family to evolve.
Exploring the Intricacies of Friendship
While episode 6 is rich in Easter eggs, its standout feature is the nuanced portrayal of the main characters. Jod Na Nawood has quickly become one of the most captivating figures in the Star Wars universe, and the dynamic between the four young leads showcases their unique, lovable traits. Notably, the episode emphasizes that despite their adventurous journeys, genuine connections are limited mainly to the pairings of Wim and Neel and Fern and KB. Fortunately, my reservations were dispelled. This segment proved to be one of the most character-focused in the series, shedding light on friendships that previously lay dormant. KB’s struggle with her augmentations and the resultant fears of losing her friends add layers to her character, effectively making her more relatable thanks to Kratter’s performance.
This subplot culminates in a genuine friendship between KB and Wim, exemplified when Wim helps KB adjust her augmentations without judgment. While Fern and Neel’s side story received less focus, Fern’s small, reflective lesson on the realities of friendship was skillfully tied back into KB’s growth, further enriching the narrative.
High-Octane Action Sequences
Despite its previous emphasis on character development over action, episode 6 of Skeleton Crew delivers one of the series’ most high-stakes action sequences. As KB and Wim confront a massive Trash Crab, Fern and Neel take control of the Onyx Cinder, making a daring flight to save their friends.
Under the direction of seasoned filmmaker Bryce Dallas Howard, known for her work on The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, this sequence combines thrilling action with heartfelt moments, injecting adrenaline into a normally slower-paced narrative. The showcase of advanced CGI effects elevates this episode, especially during the gripping opening dogfight between X-Wings and pirates.
