Snoop Dogg Addresses Kendrick Lamar and Lil Wayne Super Bowl Drama: “I Understand Both Sides of the Coin”

Snoop Dogg recently addressed the ongoing controversy surrounding Kendrick Lamar and Lil Wayne in relation to the upcoming Super Bowl halftime show. During his appearance on Shannon Sharpe and Chad Ochocinco Johnson’s Nightcap on Thursday, September 12, Snoop shared that he did not hold a strong opinion about the halftime show. The legendary rapper, known for his hit “Gin and Juice,”stated:

“I don’t really have no opinion, but what I do wanna say is, just remember where the NFL was 15 years ago when it comes to Hip Hop. How many Hip Hop artists were able to grace that stage 15 years ago? So I understand both sides of the coin and I understand how people feel.”

Snoop Dogg emphasized his neutral stance and reminisced about the opportunity he had to perform at the Super Bowl thanks to Dr. Dre, while also reaffirming his loyalty to Kendrick Lamar, Lil Wayne, Jay-Z, and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

The announcement of Kendrick Lamar as the headliner for the upcoming New Orleans Super Bowl halftime show generated mixed reactions, with many fans believing that New Orleans native Lil Wayne deserved the spot.

Snoop Dogg Praises Kendrick Lamar and Lil Wayne

Kendrick Lamar, coming off his successful feud with Drake and the hit single “Not Like Us”, was revealed as the headliner for Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show on Sunday, September 8. This news was well-received by many fans eager for the performance.

However, some felt the esteemed slot should have been awarded to Lil Wayne, especially considering that the Super Bowl will take place at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. Alongside social media critics, notable artists such as Nicki Minaj and Birdman expressed their support for Wayne and skepticism towards Jay-Z, who is one of the event’s co-organizers.

During his recent appearance on the show, Snoop Dogg provided a balanced viewpoint, acknowledging the sentiments from both camps and urging everyone to reflect on the state of Hip Hop 15 years ago.

Recalling his experience at the 2022 Super Bowl Halftime Show, Snoop mentioned how he performed simply to support Dr. Dre. He noted that, despite not performing his own music, it ended up being a “great moment”for all involved.

Snoop Dogg advised those who perform at the Super Bowl to remember that it is a “12-13-minute performance”without any payment involved.

Instead of aligning with either side, Snoop Dogg glorified both Lil Wayne and Kendrick Lamar, stating:

“Lil Wayne is the G.O.A.T. of New Orleans rap. Remember, I was at No Limit Records for three years and I watched his whole career come to life, and then I watched him get bigger than me — and I was gigantic at the time.”

Snoop Dogg also mentioned his connections with Jay-Z:

“Me and Wayne is family to this day, me and Kendrick is family to this day, and me and JAY-Z, and me and Roger Goodell. I don’t know who the decision-maker is; all I know is that I’ll be at home watching the Super Bowl and when the halftime show comes on, I’ll be watching that as well.”

Just last week, Lil Wayne posted an emotional video on Instagram expressing his disappointment over being overlooked for the halftime show. He confessed that this choice “hurt a lot”and lamented not being mentally prepared for the outcome.

Despite feeling that there was “nothing better”than headlining the show in his hometown, Wayne expressed gratitude to his fans for their unwavering support, stating, “I really appreciate that, I really do.”

“It broke me and I’m just trying to put me back together. But my God, have you all helped me. Thanks to all of my peers, my friends, my family, my homies on the sports television and everybody repping me.”

Wayne concluded his reflections by thanking his fans and acknowledging the feeling of having let them down by not being selected. However, he reassured everyone that he’s focusing on his music and personal growth.
