Sofia Carson is making waves once again with her recent project, Carry-On, continuing her fruitful collaboration with Netflix. The talented actress from Fort Lauderdale has been in the industry for over ten years, gaining initial recognition through Disney Channel hits like Austin & Ally and the Descendants series. Her popularity reached new heights in 2022 when she starred in Purple Hearts, which became Netflix’s third most-watched film of the year.
In Carry-On, Carson plays the role of Nora Parisi, an airport employee entangled in a complex romance with Taron Egerton’s character, Ethan Kopek, a TSA agent. Unbeknownst to her, Nora’s life hangs in the balance when a mysterious traveler, portrayed by Jason Bateman, blackmails Ethan, forcing him to smuggle a dangerous package onto a flight scheduled for Christmas Eve.
As Carry-On premieres on Netflix, ScreenRant engaged Carson in an interview to discuss her character, put her airport security knowledge to the test, and offer a sneak peek into her upcoming Netflix project, My Oxford Year, adapted from Julia Whelan’s acclaimed 2018 romantic comedy novel.
Sofia Carson Engages in “Checked Bag or Carry-On”
The Actress Tests Her TSA Knowledge
ScreenRant: I’ve created a fun game for you! It’s called “Checked Bag or Carry-On.”I will name three Christmas-themed items, and you tell me if they belong in a checked bag or a carry-on.
Sofia Carson: Genius.
First item: a glass Christmas tree ornament.
Sofia Carson: I’d say carry-on, wrapped in lots of tissue. I want to control how it’s placed because it’s so fragile.
Fantastic choice! So, for the next one, carry-on or checked bag?
Sofia Carson: That wouldn’t be allowed in a carry-on, so checked bag.
Sofia Carson: That depends on the size of the present. I’d lean toward my checked bag.
Carson’s Character in Carry-On is “A Fighter”
“She’s Kind of the Hope and the Heart of the Movie…”
Let’s delve into your character, Nora. There are insightful moments that reveal her mental resilience. After a disagreement with Ethan, she distracts herself by entertaining a child, yet later, she’s caught on camera leaving a room in tears, indicating her desire to keep her emotions private. How do these moments illustrate Nora’s character?
Sofia Carson: She is definitely a fighter. Nora continues to push forward, refusing to let life’s challenges defeat her. I see her as the emotional core of the film, and I appreciate you noting those subtle yet revealing moments.
There’s a particular line where Nora questions Ethan about his career promotion: ‘Okay, and would that make you happy?’ What significance does this line carry regarding their relationship?
Sofia Carson: That line speaks volumes. It was one of my favorite exchanges because it encapsulates their relationship. Nora genuinely desires Ethan’s happiness; she doesn’t want him to chase something that doesn’t fulfill him. For her, his contentment is paramount because it contributes to their family’s well-being.
Nora is aware that while Ethan focuses on obtaining a promotion as a means to provide, she values him being true to himself, wanting him to find joy and engagement in life, which showcases the beautiful dynamics of their relationship.
Carson’s Anticipated Netflix Project, My Oxford Year, Arrives in 2025
“It Was Such an Honor to Bring That Story to Life…”
With the success of Carry-On as part of your ongoing partnership with Netflix, fans are eagerly awaiting My Oxford Year. Can you share your experience filming this adaptation?
Sofia Carson: It was truly an honor to work on this beloved book. The announcement generated an overwhelming response from fans, and we had an incredible shooting experience. We wrapped up filming about a month ago in London and Oxford. My co-star, Corey, was amazing, and I was thrilled to serve as an executive producer as well.
The film embodies both heartbreak and hope, and I’m excited to share it with audiences next year.
