Sonic 3 Cast and Directors Reflect on Shadow Excitement and Cherished Memories from the Film Set

Sonic the Hedgehog 3: A New Chapter in the Beloved Franchise

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has recently debuted in theaters, and it’s clear that the franchise continues to charm audiences, much like a classic that gets better with age. Since the release of the inaugural Sonic game on Sega Genesis in 1991, the brand has maintained a stronghold in pop culture, especially with the resurgence of live-action adaptations that have captured the hearts of fans around the world. With Ben Schwartz voicing the iconic blue hedgehog and a returning cast including James Marsden and Tika Sumpter, Sonic’s universe is expanding dramatically.

The previous installment, Sonic 2, showcased thrilling adventures with trials against Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) and the introduction of Knuckles (Idris Elba) as a formidable ally. In Sonic 3, however, the stakes are raised even higher with the introduction of Shadow, voiced by none other than Keanu Reeves. This new character emerges as a powerful adversary, creating challenges like never before for Sonic and his friends.

In celebration of the film’s premiere, ScreenRant had the chance to engage with director Jeff Fowler and the star-studded cast on the red carpet, diving into their experiences on set, favorite indulgent snacks, and unique thoughts on their characters’ journeys.

Tika Sumpter on Her Dynamic with James Marsden

“I’m just grateful we built this family with a lot of heart.”

ScreenRant: It’s a joy to see you and James together on screen! What’s your experience collaborating with him across these films?

Tika Sumpter: James is one of my favorite people ever! We genuinely enjoy each other’s company outside of work, which translates to authentic chemistry on screen. I feel fortunate that we’ve created a family vibe that truly resonates.

ScreenRant: Your characters have imparted valuable lessons to Sonic. What have you personally taken away from these films?

Tika Sumpter: One key lesson has been to follow your heart and trust your instincts. Family should always be there for one another, and honesty is vital when you’re in trouble.

ScreenRant: Shadow is making his debut in this film, played by Keanu Reeves. What can you share about his role?

Tika Sumpter: Shadow is Sonic’s most significant threat yet. His power is formidable, and Sonic will need all the help he can get!

ScreenRant: Sonic has a passion for chili dogs, while Tails enjoys mint candies, Knuckles prefers grapes, and Shadow favors Doritos and Hot Pockets. What about you? What’s your guilty pleasure?

Tika Sumpter: I love salt and pepper potato chips. They’re my ultimate vice!

Jeff Fowler: It’s an incredible honor. For him to join our Sonic family is a dream come true. His energy and enthusiasm are palpable, and I think every fan would agree—his casting was simply perfect.

ScreenRant: Considering Sonic’s preferences, what’s your go-to treat?

Idris Elba: Surprisingly, my favorite is iceberg lettuce. It may sound odd, but it’s great for staying in shape!

ScreenRant: With both you and Keanu lending voices to characters in the Sonic franchise, how likely do you think a live-action version of your characters from Cyberpunk could be a possibility?

Idris Elba: Honestly, that would be amazing! I believe that if any film could bring that to life, it would definitely be achievable. I’d love to see how our characters could interact.
