With Sonic the Hedgehog 3 set to release this December, audiences are already buzzing about what to expect from this new installment in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise . What role do GUN play in the new story, as they are portrayed as more heroic than in the games? How did Gerard Robotnik manage to stay alive, and what impact will that have on the plot? And most importantly, will the Olive Garden joke that was referenced in the first two films and the Knuckles series continue?
Of course, most of the attention has been focused on Shadow, including discussions about how dark his plot will be and doubts about whether Paramount will decide to stick with tradition and give Shadow a weapon. Given that the trailers hint at inspiration from Sonic Adventure 2, this also opens up the possibility of introducing two key characters from the Sonic universe.
Amy Rose is the basis of the Shadow story
Bright and energetic, Amy debuted in Sonic CD in 1993, where she was first kidnapped by Metal Sonic. At first shown as a typical hedgehog girl with a fascination with tarot and dreams of sharing a destiny with Sonic, Amy has since become a standout in the franchise. Amy has mastered boxing and has demonstrated her usefulness in combat, including using her signature hammer, Piko Piko, when needed. Although she began as a follower, Amy has since become a useful leader, forming Team Rose. Her greatest asset is her compassion. Amy is always eager to help those in need, whether it’s reuniting Cream with Chocola or Big with Froggy. In Sonic Adventure, she helps reform E-102 Gamma by refusing to give him Bird, showing what it means to be friends and be friends. Her kindness has made her one of the most well-known characters in the series.
This kindness allows Amy to have a heart-to-heart talk with Shadow aboard the Ark in Sonic Adventure 2. While acknowledging that some people can be selfish, Amy argues that humanity is generally good and encourages Shadow to save them. This conversation helps Shadow realize that Maria’s final wishes were not for revenge as he thought, but for the best for humanity. This is what transforms Shadow from an antagonist to an ally. Amy is instrumental in Shadow’s transformation into a hero and certainly deserves her big screen debut. (She may be voiced by Anna Kendrick.)
Rouge – anti-heroine Sonica
Rouge is a cunning treasure hunter with a passion for jewels. Unlike Amy, who is a hero, Rouge is an anti-heroine who is not above using her selfishness for her own sake, willing to work for the government if it suits her interests. While Shadow is a darker counterpoint to Sonic, Rouge is a natural rival for Knuckles, who guards the Chaos Emeralds. Both possess super strength, including powerful punches. Although they have long been bitter rivals, after Knuckles saves Rouge, she warms up to him, and their relationship is flirtatious throughout the franchise, playing into the femme fatale role.
Additionally, Rouge and Shadow team up on the Broadcast Team in Sonic Adventure 2, though Rouge’s greed for jewels often gets the better of her. However, throughout the franchise, a real bond is formed between the two. Despite her self-centered approach, Rouge truly cares for Shadow, and he often trusts her without showing vulnerability. Rouge even shows loyalty to him in 2006’s Sonic the Hedgehog. Seeing these iconic anti-heroes of the franchise on screen will be interesting, and will give Shadow a reliable ally to interact with over the course of the film.
With the most anticipated Sonic the Hedgehog game set to arrive this winter, there’s plenty to be excited about. Shadow is one of Sonic’s most popular characters, and the trailers have already shown that there will be a lot of depth to his character and story. In that regard, the presence of Amy and Rouge, two characters who see a different side of Shadow than his rival Sonic, will help to flesh him out for viewers. What’s more, Amy and Rouge have long been cornerstones of the franchise, and it would be great to see them on the big screen. While there are concerns about their introduction – Amy has long been associated with an obsessive crush on Sonic, and Rouge could be misconstrued as an attempt to sexualize the character – with the right approach, they could undoubtedly please both new and old fans just as much as their male counterparts.
