Following the dramatic conclusion of Squid Game Season 1, where Gi-hun emerged as the lone victor, fans are keen to see how he utilizes the enormous cash prize. Right from the beginning of Season 2, the narrative dives into Gi-hun’s decisions regarding his newfound wealth. Played masterfully by Lee Jung-jae, Gi-hun not only exhibited luck and intelligence during the harrowing games but also secured a life-altering sum of 45.6 billion won.
Despite this windfall, Gi-hun initially struggles to understand how to manage his wealth. What seemed like a blessing soon transforms into a painful reminder of his traumatic experiences. The burden of his past exploits weighs heavily on him, inhibiting his ability to fully embrace his riches. Yet, as Season 2 unfolds, Gi-hun discovers a renewed sense of purpose that motivates him to harness his funds towards achieving a significant aim.
Gi-hun’s Mission: Tracking Down the Game’s Organizers
Recruiting Old Allies to Aid His Quest
In the early scenes of Season 2, we see Gi-hun taking strategic steps to safeguard his winnings. He rents several rooms in an inexpensive motel, using one particularly as a secure storage space for his cash. To maintain oversight, he invests in CCTV cameras for key entrances, ensuring he can monitor activities at the motel.
In addition to securing his asset, Gi-hun repays his past debts and reconnects with the loan sharks who once plagued him. By turning to them for assistance, he embarks on a mission to locate the shadowy figures orchestrating the games—a group he refers to as his enemies. His objective is clear: to seek vengeance against those exploiting vulnerable individuals by compelling them to participate in dangerous games.
A Two-Year Pursuit for the Salesman
The Salesman: The Key to Network’s Secrets
Gi-hun’s journey hinges on his belief that the elusive Salesman holds the keys to unearthing the identities of the game’s masterminds. To facilitate this search, he hires Mr. Kim and provides a considerable sum for the task. This investment enables Mr. Kim to assemble a robust team dedicated to locating the Salesman throughout Seoul.
For two long years, Gi-hun’s team scours subway stations and other urban areas, hoping to uncover the whereabouts of Gong Yoo’s enigmatic character from Season 1. Despite their relentless efforts, they often find themselves at a dead-end, raising doubts regarding the Salesman’s existence. Mr. Kim and his team begin to question Gi-hun’s harrowing accounts of the island, yet the promise of a one billion won reward motivates them to persevere. Eventually, just past the halfway mark of Episode 1, Mr. Kim and his right-hand man finally catch a glimpse of the elusive Salesman, reinvigorating their quest.
Assessing Gi-hun’s Remaining Wealth
Unspecified Financial Figures
Despite several expenditures along his journey, including hiring personnel and procuring armaments, it appears that Gi-hun retains a significant portion of his fortune at the start of Season 2. Even if he allocated up to $2 million for his efforts, he would still possess approximately 93% of his original winnings. His initial fortune of 45.6 billion won equates to roughly $31.4 million, ensuring that Gi-hun’s wealth remains largely intact as the story progresses.
