What drew you to the hospital setting for St. Denis Medical?
Eric Ledgin: This is my first time running a show, so I had to think deeply about the experience I wanted to convey. My own hospital experiences have been a blend of daunting and unexpectedly humorous moments. Hospitals, particularly emergency rooms, possess a unique atmosphere where moments of levity can break through the tension.
Many people can recall humorous or poignant stories related to their ER visits, regardless of the gravity of the circumstances. This led me to consider the workplace dynamics: doctors and nurses navigating their daily tasks while patients confront life-altering situations create an enriching storytelling backdrop.
How do you balance the comedic elements with the serious nature of hospital work?
Eric Ledgin: My inspiration stemmed from a personal experience with a partner who was undergoing treatment for breast cancer. I observed the necessity of humor in easing anxieties during hospital visits. Nurses often possess a sharp sense of humor that can lighten the atmosphere and improve patient experiences. They know when to crack jokes and when to maintain seriousness, striking a balance that enhances both their own work life and the comfort of those in their care.
In St. Denis Medical, I wanted to portray medical staff who bring humor into their daily grind, reflecting their true personalities while also shedding light on the essential workplace dynamics and relationships inherent in a high-stakes environment.
Contrasting Approaches to Care: Joyce and Alex
“There’s something interesting about two people who ultimately both want the same thing from a big-picture standpoint.”
Eric Ledgin: The chemistry between the actors portraying Joyce and Alex is remarkable. Our series intentionally avoids depicting negative attitudes in healthcare, emphasizing the shared goals these two characters possess despite their differing perspectives. Alex, focused on immediate patient care, and Joyce, who looks at the hospital’s future aspirations, complement each other beautifully, showcasing both a nurturing approach and higher ambitions.
Unfolding Workplace Romance: Matt’s Infatuation with Serena
“That seemed like a fun thing to play and be able to work into a slow burn.”
Eric Ledgin: Reflecting on the dynamics of relationships showcased in Superstore, I wanted to avoid forcing a central romantic storyline unless it emerged organically. Instead, we opted for Matt’s understated crush on Serena, which offers an engaging slow burn. Their contrasting personalities allow for intriguing character development throughout the season.

“I think and hope we landed it in a place that feels warm for people while still being funny.”
Eric Ledgin: Our season’s structure allows for the introduction of various guest stars, including my longtime friend Stephen Schneider, who plays Chaplain Steve. Our holiday episode particularly resonates with me due to its blend of humor and poignancy, encapsulating the festive spirit while addressing relatable scenarios of hospital life during the season.
