Star Wars: Skeleton Crew has recently unveiled a new starship, the Onyx Cinder, which poses a serious challenge to the Millennium Falcon’s reputation as the franchise’s most beloved “hunk of junk.”While the Millennium Falcon, famously known for its iconic status in the Star Wars saga, is often affectionately referred to as garbage—first articulated by Luke Skywalker in the original trilogy and echoed by Rey in Star Wars: The Force Awakens—the Onyx Cinder may just take the title of the biggest wreck in the galaxy.
This pirate ship, once owned by the notorious Tak Rennod, has a storied past but is now in a state of disrepair. Having been left buried on the planet At Attin for an extended period, it raises a compelling question: Could the Onyx Cinder be an even bigger “hunk of junk”than the Millennium Falcon?
The Onyx Cinder: A Ship in Ruins
A Genuine Piece of Junk?
The primary distinction between the Millennium Falcon and the Onyx Cinder is quite stark. Despite looking like a heap of scrap, the Falcon harbors formidable power. In A New Hope, its capabilities were shrouded in mystery, but viewers quickly learned it had speed and strength beyond its ragged exterior.
Conversely, the Onyx Cinder seems like a true embodiment of a starship in decline. In a typical pirate fashion, it has been pieced together from various discarded ship parts. Rather than invest in proper repairs, Tak Rennod has resorted to scavenging components, leaving the Onyx Cinder in a precarious state, which becomes more evident throughout the Skeleton Crew series.
Can the Onyx Cinder Even Make the Journey Back?
The Kids’ Journey Home Seems Uncertain
With the Onyx Cinder’s current condition, a pressing question arises: can it even transport the kids back to At Attin? The children’s journey could face a more significant challenge as depicted in episode 5 of Skeleton Crew, where Jod Na Nawood betrays the group and assumes control, complicating their escape.
In addition, SM-33 has allied with Nawood, further raising doubts about whether the children will be able to pilot the Onyx Cinder effectively, should they manage to return to it. As the series progresses, viewers are left to wonder if the children and Nawood will ultimately part ways or find common ground. Regardless, the Onyx Cinder is on track to potentially outshine the Millennium Falcon in the “junk”department.
The first five episodes of Skeleton Crew are now available for streaming on Disney+.
