The Akiva Summit has become increasingly significant within the Star Wars universe, and it is crucial for every fan to understand its implications. The Akiva Summit serves as a pivotal event in Chuck Wendig’s Aftermath series, illustrating how the Empire navigated its strategy following the demise of Emperor Palpatine. As Marvel Comics delves deeper into narratives set in the post-Return of the Jedi timeline, the Battle of Jakku comic series intersects with various stories, including Wendig’s work, particularly highlighting the Akiva Summit’s relevance.
In the first issue of Star Wars: The Battle of Jakku – Republic Under Siege (2024) by a talented team comprising Alex Segura, Stefano Raffaele, Jethro Morales, Alex Sinclair, Jim Campbell, and Joe Caramagna, we observe Grand Moff Ubrik Adelhard receiving an invitation to the Akiva Summit. However, he swiftly declines, believing that the future of the Empire lies within the Anoat sector, the region he had previously blockaded. Adelhard views his new regime as the only true bastion of loyalty to the Empire and resolves to champion what he once considered treasonous allies.
The Akiva Summit not only marks a critical event in the Star Wars saga but also offers insight into how Adelhard’s ascension shaped the galaxy’s fate, representing a turning point in the struggle between the Empire and the New Republic.
This important summit is reframed as the occasion that enabled Adelhard to eliminate his Imperial competitors and clear obstacles in his quest for power.
The Akiva Summit: A Decisive Crossroad for the Empire
The Formation and Collapse of the Imperial Future Council
Following Emperor Palpatine’s death during the Battle of Endor, his advisor, Gallius Rax, initiated the contingency plan known as Operation: Cinder, aimed at punishing the Empire for its failures in safeguarding the Emperor. This bold operation sought to dismantle the existing Galactic Empire, preparing the ground for a new regime consisting solely of the most ruthless leaders. However, Moff Adelhard was not willing to relinquish his power and opted to blockade his sector, deceiving its inhabitants into believing that the Emperor still lived.
The summit, initially intended for the regrouping of Imperial forces, ultimately became a grim finale for many surviving Imperials.
Meanwhile, Grand Admiral Rae Sloane convened a meeting on Akiva, gathering several high-ranking Imperial officials, including herself, Grand Moff Valco Pandion, General Jylia Shale, Arsin Carssus, and Yupe Tashu. This gathering came to be known as the Imperial Future Council, and its primary objective was to deliberate the fate of the ailing Empire amidst dwindling resources. During this summit, a crucial choice had to be made: should they consolidate their remaining naval forces or distribute them across the galaxy?
Regrettably for the Empire’s remaining leaders, this summit marked their doom rather than a course for revival. As the events in Star Wars: The Battle of Jakku – Republic Under Siege unfold, it becomes evident that the Akiva Summit played a significant role in paving the way for Adelhard’s consolidation of power, as he eradicated formidable allies who could have impeded his ambitions.
Admiral Sloane’s Role in the Summit: A Devastating Blow to the Empire
Admiral Rax’s Strategy Culminates in Palpatine’s Endgame
The summit faced an abrupt interruption when rebel pilot Norra Wexley uncovered the meeting’s secret and rallied the citizens of Akiva against the Imperial forces. The New Republic obtained intelligence about the summit—potentially from an unknown informant—and quickly dispatched a naval contingent to investigate. As a consequence, the New Republic successfully destroyed two Imperial Star Destroyers, forcing the summit to a premature conclusion.
After freeing herself from the New Republic’s grasp, Admiral Sloane learned from Admiral Rax that he had orchestrated the attack on the summit. He had persuaded her to facilitate the gathering as a means to identify the Empire’s remaining stronghold and eliminate rivals—allowing Rax to assess those who were worthy of leading a new Empire from the ashes of the old. This clever manipulation served both Palpatine’s ultimate strategy and Rax’s ambition, paving a path to his succession.
The many officials slain or incarcerated during the Akiva Summit could have significantly hindered Adelhard’s rise to power, both directly and indirectly. As Marvel highlights the build-up to the Battle of Jakku, the Akiva Summit emerges as the pivotal moment that cleared Adelhard’s path, removing competitors and facilitating his ascent within the Empire.
Adelhard Emerges as a Major Threat to the New Republic
By Rejecting the Invitation, Adelhard Freed Himself to Act While Others Perished
Fleeing Akiva’s capital, Myrra, from both the population uprising and New Republic forces proved challenging. The remaining officers of the Imperial Future Council utilized a civilian shuttle to facilitate their escape, but the shuttle tragically broke apart during the flight. Ultimately, while Admiral Sloane managed to find her way to safety, both Pandion and Crassus met their demise, while Shale and Tashu fell into New Republic custody. Thus, the Akiva Summit culminated in a calamity, marking a significant victory for the New Republic, even as Rax celebrated it as a success in furthering Palpatine’s ambitions.
When Moff Adelhard received Admiral Sloane’s invitation to the Akiva Summit, he chose to turn it down. His response urged Sloane to divert resources toward sending him reinforcements instead of hosting a meeting. Given the disastrous events that transpired at the summit, rejecting the invitation ultimately proved to be a wise decision. Had he attended, he could have faced imprisonment or even death, thus jeopardizing his blockade of the Anoat sector.
Sloane’s Setback Strengthened Adelhard’s Position
Chasing a Personal Connection to the Dark Side
In the aftermath of the Akiva Summit, many Imperial officers began to realize that unity was no longer a viable strategy; they started to see the merit in Adelhard’s tactics of control through dominance. Grand General Kenner Loring, leading a splinter faction causing disturbances for Rax, hailed Adelhard’s blockade as “the stuff of legend.”
Loring’s faction remained entrenched on Malastare, where Marvel’s comics now depict Adelhard seeking to learn the ways of the Dark Side of the Force. Sloane’s failure presents Adelhard with an opportune moment to forge alliances and attain his ambitions. Even Yupe Tashu, who directly witnessed the debacle at the Akiva Summit, is now rallying behind Adelhard to increase his influence.
Marvel’s current Star Wars comics are providing in-depth explorations of events following Palpatine’s fall, elucidating precisely how the Akiva Summit determined the fate of Imperial factions—whether they thrived or faded into obscurity during this critical juncture in galactic history.
