Star Wars’ Upgraded “Hunk Of Junk” Starship Now More Impressive Than Ever

This article contains spoilers for Star Wars: Skeleton Crew episode 6.

The latest installment of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew has given its starship, the Onyx Cinder, an exciting upgrade. Since its introduction in 1977, the Star Wars universe has featured iconic vessels, notably the Millennium Falcon, which despite its outward appearance, was renowned for its impressive speed. Han Solo famously declared that the Falcon “made the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs,”solidifying its legacy as more than just a “hunk of junk.”

In contrast, the Onyx Cinder was unearthed by the kids on their home planet of At Attin, exuding all the signs of a dilapidated spacecraft. In its initial appearance on Lanupa, pieces of its hull actually detached during landing. By episode 6, it comes as no surprise that the local inhabitants opted to send the Onyx Cinder to the junkyard. However, a remarkable transformation at the episode’s conclusion changed its perceived value.

The Onyx Cinder Revamps Its Image

A crucial moment from episode 2 foreshadowed this makeover when SM-33 cautioned against pressing a particular button in the Onyx Cinder’s cockpit: the “emergency hull demolition sequencer.”Initially played for humor, this detail became significant when it resurfaced in the recap of episode 6. Fern ultimately pushed the button, triggering the Onyx Cinder’s stunning renovation, shedding its “hunk of junk”facade.

While Han Solo often felt somewhat ashamed of the Falcon’s outer appearance, Captain Tak Rennod had a different strategy. He experienced purposefully hiding the ship’s true aesthetics beneath a decoy exterior. The hull demolition sequencer set off charges that removed this misleading shell, unveiling the Onyx Cinder’s true form and allowing it to make a dramatic escape from Lanupa.

This transformation doesn’t come without its drawbacks. Although the ship appears sleeker and more striking, it did lose some of its armaments, including several gun turrets and some landing thrusters.

A Perfect Twist for Skeleton Crew

The revelation surrounding the Onyx Cinder wonderfully complements the overarching themes of Skeleton Crew. The series delves into themes of deception, as the children navigate the complexities of a bizarre galaxy. Wim, in particular, finds himself misplacing his trust in both people and creatures, voicing his frustrations throughout the episode. Yet, at times, deception leads to the uncovering of extraordinary hidden treasures.

It’s essential to note that the Onyx Cinder, while now more visually appealing, is far from flawless. After centuries beneath the earth, it has accumulated significant wear and tear. Even as it launched away from Lanupa, its engine was still ablaze, and ironically, the first responders of their ‘new ship’ unintentionally dragged it through the dirt.

In summary, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew cleverly obscured the true capabilities of the Onyx Cinder, setting the stage for an engaging narrative twist that enhances the adventure for viewers.
