Though it seems impossible to envision The Office without Steve Carell, more than 35 actors were initially considered for the role of Michael Scott prior to Carell’s casting. In Andy Green’s book, The Office: The Untold Story of the Greatest Sitcom of the 2000s: An Oral History, executive producer Ben Silverman disclosed that talents such as Rick Moranis and John C. Reilly were also in the mix. Both Paul Giamatti and Phillip Seymour Hoffman were offered the part but ultimately declined. The final contenders for Michael Scott were narrowed down to Carell and Bob Odenkirk.

Odenkirk later discussed this near-casting in an episode of the The Office Ladies podcast, hosted by Jenna Fisher and Angela Kinsey—who played Angela Martin on the show. He shared that his take on Michael Scott might have introduced “a little bit too much earnest seriousness”to the character, ultimately agreeing that the network made the right call in choosing Steve Carell.
