It’s amusing how superhero flicks like Superman: Legacy often face significant early leaks from toy releases long before the actual movie premiere. In this instance, the information surfaced even before the initial trailer was unveiled. One of these toy leaks has seemingly confirmed a prominent villain for the upcoming blockbuster, despite James Gunn’s earlier attempts to dismiss the speculation.
Upon reflecting, Gunn’s refutation of the villain’s involvement may have been subtly evasive rather than a complete rejection, suggesting that he anticipated the truth would eventually be uncovered.
Villain in Superman: Legacy Revealed
A recent toy listing, shared on X by insider Daniel Richtman, has confirmed that Ultraman will appear in Superman: Legacy. In his tweet, Richtman stated, “Ultraman confirmed via a new toy listing for the Superman film. So it’s confirmed it’s Ultraman and not Ulysses.” This announcement clears up previous debates regarding the identity of the main antagonist in the next Superman adventure, with many internet users having already speculated about Ultraman’s role.

When the notion of Ultraman being the principal villain emerged, Gunn took to social media to clarify. He asserted that Lex Luthor would be the main adversary in Superman: Legacy, paralleling Superman as the primary hero. Shortly after dismissing the Ultraman rumors, set images began to circulate that appeared to depict Ultraman in action alongside Frank Grillo portraying Rick Flag Sr., and David Corenswet as Superman.
Can’t wait for his fans to try and spin it and say “Well technically James never said Ultraman wasn’t in the movie, he just said Ultraman wasn’t the main villain”https://t.co/HkCEKa5bye pic.twitter.com/5rt2cnrPMI— THE T’Challa Stan (@TChalla_1966) June 25, 2024
Despite the burgeoning evidence from the toy release, Gunn remains cautious, refraining from explicitly confirming Ultraman’s role in Legacy. When queried on Threads about the villain’s inclusion, he mentioned that he must approve all toy designs and implied that the leak doesn’t spoil any significant details, hinting that he could still be referring to the term “main” in relation to antagonists.

For those unfamiliar with Ultraman’s narrative, he is typically portrayed as a malevolent counterpart to Superman from Earth 3 in various DC comic plots. Notably, past animated interpretations have illustrated him as a sort of crime lord collaborating with evil versions of Wonder Woman and Batman, known in that universe as Owl Man. Fans of Superman: Legacy are in for a treat when James Gunn’s vision of Ultraman hits screens on July 11, 2025.
