Superman & Lois appears to be approaching a sudden finish as it embarks on its fourth and final season, driven by challenging decisions made behind the scenes. Nevertheless, the creators are committed to ensuring that the show exits with impact rather than fading away quietly.

Initially part of the Arrowverse, the titular characters of Superman & Lois established a distinct identity that set them apart from the broader universe. The show’s creators have even indicated that it exists in an alternate universe, thus differentiating its family-centered narrative from the more extravagant elements of the overarching franchise. Although this focused storytelling contributed to the show’s strength and popularity, the series will conclude on The CW after its fourth season. This ending coincides with plans from DC Studios’ head James Gunn to usher in a new rebooted DCU, both in theaters and on television.

However, the cast and crew are determined to bring a powerful and engaging conclusion rather than a lackluster finale. In an exclusive interview with Comicbook, showrunner Todd Helbing discussed the compelling work underway in the first segment of the season. “Superman holds a unique place in this show, and no one can rival him in that regard,” Helbing noted. “To allow the other characters to develop their own heroic identities, they must face significant challenges. We’re focused on illustrating how all characters are undergoing personal journeys, each with their own obstacles. Their responses to these struggles will define their heroism. In this final season, the death of Superman will truly illuminate the growth of our supporting characters.”

The narrative indeed took bold steps, with the premier episode of the final season showcasing Superman’s tragic run-in with Doomsday. This pivotal moment was soon overshadowed by the emotional sacrifice of General Sam Lane, setting the stage for a dramatic return of hope. Actress Bitsie Tulloch remarked, “When they revealed some of the upcoming plot points — after a season of intense emotional arcs, especially regarding cancer — I was taken aback. They mentioned, ‘Superman will die in one episode, and your father will die in three.’ I thought, ‘Seriously? Again?’” She reflected on the agony of shooting the scene where she witnesses her father’s death, stating it was profoundly moving. While the series has consistently embraced a solemn tone, this initial storyline firmly establishes that Superman & Lois is poised to conclude the Arrowverse with significant weight.

As season four draws to a close, it will affirm that the legacy of the Arrowverse transitions to Gunn, as the new DCU begins to form its canon with elements introduced over the years by Arrow, The Flash, and Legends of Tomorrow. While Superman & Lois may not have been perfectly aligned with this extensive legacy, it insists on leaving a mark that should be appreciated by fans in its final moments.

Superman & Lois is currently airing on The CW every Monday, with previous seasons available for streaming on Max.
